Steve Wiser, a local architect and historian, has some thoughts on the Bridges Authority meeting held yesterday:

Tolls are needed on all bridges to pay for this $4 billion dollar project.

BUT – is this $4 billion dollar project needed if tolls on all bridges is the only way to pay for it?

This is the dilemma we face today.

Are we better off, or worse off, if all bridges are tolled?

No community in America has tolled their bridges in this manner. We are essentially cutting ourselves in half.

Do you think Nashville, Indianapolis, or Cincinnati would cut their region in half like this?

We will be conducting a societal experiment never before tried in urban planning. Once you open this Pandora’s Box, you will not be able to close it. I feel many negative consequences will result from it.

I regularly cross the bridge several times a week for shopping and dining. If tolls are passed, I will greatly limit by bridge crossings.

Read the rest from Wiser after the jump…

I have prepared a commentary entitled “A Bridges Reality Check” that I will hope you will read. (For those wanting to read it, it is on my website)

Several of the conclusions are that building only the East End Bridge will carry MORE cross-river traffic than if we built both the new downtown and East End Bridge together – this is per the Bridge Authority’s own “Environmental Impact Statement”. And, the community overwhelming supports the East End Bridge.

Per a recent news report, supersizing highways leads to more accidents, and not less.

And, per the recent news article on job loss in the community, one of the recommendations is to improve regional cooperation. How will tolls do that?

This community needs long-term jobs and tolls will only harm economic development.

There are other options we can implement to achieve this same goal such as separating the project and building local-access bridges. And, I’m in favor of tolling the East End Bridge.

I am a half-glass full optimist, but if tolls on all bridges is approved, I hate to say it but, I will be a half-glass empty pessimist. I hope you do not sign a death warrant for this community.

David Yates met Doug Protecting Our White Women Hawkins (who thinks he’s running against Jerry Abramson) last week for for a debate hosted by The League of Women Voters.

After Doug Hawkins sat down from teabagging David Yates in the face, he continued to yell and whine like the child he is, constantly interrupting.

Here are the highlights of that behavior:

My favorite moment was when Hawkins refused to look at Yates when shaking his hand at the end of the debate.

And for all of you naysayers who are pissed that I’m not discussing the topics of conversation at the debate: south end development and business, MSD, discretionary funds, urban services district, etc. Hawkins poo-pooed everything and Yates seemed interested in everything.

After sellout Jackie Green dropped out of the mayoral race, his campaign staff took over his email list and Twitter account to distribute hilarious messages. [Twitter]

Jeffersonville, Indiana will vote again this evening on a no tolls resolution. 6:30 P.M. at City Hall, Room 101, 500 Quartermaster Court. Meanwhile, the bridges authority is still ignoring the will of the public. [Press Release]

If you missed the U.S. Senate debate at the University of Louisville last night, be sure to check it out once WHAS11 puts it online today. Oh, and Joe Gerth: The Executive Branch Ethics Commission did NOT “clear” Jack Conway of anything. Tune in to Page One later today. Dear Rand: If you didn’t tie that lady up and scare her in a creek, you should go ahead and say you did not do it. [Don't Miss It]

The debate did, indeed, turn bitter. Rand refused to shake Jack’s hand. It was great. [AP]

John Yarmuth raised $331,599 in the quarter and has $662,412 cash-on-hand. That’s a solid amount of money to get him through to election day. [Press Release]

The KFC Grease Bucket hosted the Eagles on Saturday and traffic apparently wasn’t a nightmare. Did you go? What was the experience like?
Speaking of Jack, it must be reiterated that disgusting Karl Rove’s latest ad about him is not dishonest. [Page One]

Todd Lally compared being gay to obesity. This Republican in Colorado compared being gay to alcoholism. Must be a teabagging Republican thing these days. He then pointed out how the entire Abramson cabal backs his opponent. Greg Fischer cracked a hideous joke about tolls, said the Bridges Authority is doing a fine job (Heiner said he’d review the group to determine if they stay or get replaced), fudged a bit more about the ice machine he didn’t invent. Heiner offered to open up all the hidden documents to unbury the bodies and Fischer lied yet again about his campaign not being involved in the anti-Heiner video. [Deep Mayoral Thoughts]

Footage from the debate will be archived online by noon today, according to Joe Arnold. So be sure to check it out. [WHAS11]

What are you doing for Halloween? You should go see an all-original adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Evenings of October 21, 23, 28, 30 and weekend matinees October 23, 24, 30, 31. $14 for evening shows, $10 for matinees and seniors/students are just $8. Go! [Press Release]

What? Could Chris Thieneman be involved in yet another campaign conundrum? He’s certainly no stranger to using property he owns to get what he wants.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a dozen times. Joe Gerth is the funniest newspaper man in Kentucky.

During last night’s WHAS11 3rd District Congressional debate at the University of Louisville, Gerth asked Todd Lally what he meant by “openly gay behavior” when discussing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Here’s what went down:

Isn’t it interesting that Lally didn’t answer the question? As John Yarmuth adequately pointed out, Lally’s “gay behavior” myth is just that.

You should be sure to watch the entire hour-long debate if you get the opportunity. Joe Arnold tells me the footage will soon be archived on WHAS11′s website. I particularly enjoyed the two times Lally brought up “poles.”

Second-favorite? When Lally said that corporations are people. Specifically, “I think public financing of elections is where, once you have hit socialism, that’s when you have public financing for elections. I find that to be an extreme position. Um, corporations are just entities made up of people. Corporations are people. They are not some, some nameless organization. These are people. They have a first amendment right. And the Supreme Court said that they should have it and I agree with the Supreme Court.”
