Non-subscribers will have access to a limited number of free articles on courier-journal.com each month before they are required to subscribe, although some key landing pages such as the home page, section fronts, obituaries, Cars.com and Careerbuilder.com, among others, will remain accessible to non-subscribers.

The changes mean we’ll be providing more content on topics you’ve told us you’re passionate about: managing your health, your fitness and your finances as you age; and boosting your economic IQ, including tips on earning, saving, spending and putting a roof over your head, whether you are just starting out or nearing retirement.

In this era – the era of the internet – news readers don’t pay for news. Not breaking news, not specialized regional content, not anything. Some people apparently don’t get that. And some new people clearly won’t be employed by Gannett for very long.

What this means: sites like this one – along with other media outlets – will continue to prevail against a once-great newspaper on the economic front.

Which brings us to our big question: How quickly can you read the Courier-Journal? It took us less than five minutes to go through the entire paper on Sunday.

Yet, what sets The Courier-Journal and courier-journal.com apart from blogs and other news sources is the quality of our local content and the rigid journalistic standards we follow to make sure we are bringing you the factual and complete accounting of news events from your hometown.

What kind of standards, exactly, do outlets like WFPL, WHAS11, WDRB and Business First follow?

Last time we checked, a plethora of C-J writers just cold make shiz up on a regular basis. The paper regularly refuses to issue corrections when blatant misinformation is published. And often – as was the case with Nancy Rodriguez – reporters will sit on major scandals just to protect their friends and future employers.

So this latest stunt of pushing advertising as journalism won’t surprise you:

How Amex found the news coverage it wanted

Gannett newspapers in 15 U.S. markets this month will publish short profiles of up to 150 small retailers, in a holiday shopping series sponsored exclusively by American Express.

But the stories published online so far are vague about the credit card company’s involvement — showing the nation’s biggest newspaper publisher is once more testing the limits of Journalism 101 Ethics.

At papers in Asbury Park, N.J.; Brevard, Fla.; Louisville, Ky., and Phoenix, readers are told only that the stories are “presented” by American Express.

Yet, they aren’t told the retailers are all supposed to be those accepting American Express cards, according to an internal GCI document provided to me by a reader.

But the document, a guide for photographers working on the series, is much more explicit.

“In a deal with American Express,” it says, “Gannett Co. Inc., is producing a sales campaign around Small Business Saturday called Shopping Main Street. The two-week campaign starts Nov. 23, a couple of days before Black Friday and will feature local small businesses that are American Express merchants in 15 Gannett markets.”

Among journalism ethics transgressions, this isn’t the end of the world. Still, it violates a long-standing rule designed to protect a media outlet’s credibility: Reporters don’t favor businesses in order to please advertisers.

It’s the same thing that’s been appearing in American Express advertisements in business and trade magazines for months. And now your paper will be passing that advertising off as news.

The problems also impacted the Des Moines Register.

Here’s the kicker: the Register mentions the problems on its website and offers an alternative:

Yep. They actually put that in print. AND brought up Charles Farnsley. It’s like the editorial board doesn’t even wait for the community to crack the jokes anymore.
