Jackie Green says he’s unhappy with the number of folks who have invited him to mayoral forums. So maybe he should try interacting with the press and organizations that hold these events?

Yes, the VV HQ has the Metro Council budget hearings on while the work is going on. It’s a sacrifice we’re making for you.

Edits at WFPL: Public radio’s WFPL has re-launched its news blog, a project headed up by Gabe Bullard. Let’s hope Gabe can keep up the ambitious production pace of its first few days, in which we get in on the stories the station staff is pursuing and, well, what everybody on staff is up to. Think of it as a staff meeting, but you’re not required to go. [WFPL]

Fourth Street at Five: Velocity’s Joseph Lord takes a shot at balancing the good with the bad on the occasion of Fourth Street Live’s 5th birthday. The piece includes all the usual criticisms of Cordish, and the Mayor’s defense of all the favors done for the developer, before arriving at the conclusion that the complex is successful, sort of. At least better than if it weren’t there. [Velocity]

Nice, Imaginary Views of Downtown: The 8664 organization has released another of its videos of an imagined waterfront, one without “9th Street ramps and concrete jungle.” There’s a new criticism of Jerry Abramson for pushing the downtown bridge. Seems a titanic struggle, but we’re pulling for you, guys. [8664]

Yep, Miley Cyrus Is a Big Deal: Ticket-buying frenzy stories will be all around next week when tickets for the teen queen’s show go on sale. She’s playing Freedom Hall Oct. 13 and Rupp Arena Nov. 1. No tickets will be sold at the box office, so Ticketmaster is your best bet. [Herald-Leader]

Is There Really Any Other Reason for the Special Session?: Gov. Beshear told House and Senate leaders he’ll be ordering a 2.9% across the board cut, but is still being cagey about the gambling issue. Meanwhile, his people are telling our people (Jake) that they’re collecting votes in the House for slots. [WFPL, Page One]

Zoo’s Spotlight: It’s kind of impressive that Zoo director John Walczak didn’t bail out on the Metro Council’s budget hearings after the train accident. He opened his comments with a bunch of thank you’s for everyone involved in reacting to the accident. And Jim King handing out compliments as well. Today we learned the driver was an 18-year-old female. [WLKY]

Weighing in on an East End Bridge: Former council members Ellen Call and Julie Raque Adams are writing a weekly column in the Voice-Tribune, and this column represents a sensible take on the Harrods Creek Bridge controversy. Get the damn thing open, already. [Voice-Tribune]

Now that was quite a Memorial Day weekend. You got out there and set attendance records, and got some yardwork done too. And at the risk of going all “Possibility City” on you, it was a great time to live here.

The crowd estimate for the Mayor’s Hike & Bike was about 2,000, though one of the event’s organizers gave me a much higher number. Everything went smoothly on the ride out to Shawnee Park and back, probably a little more smoothly thanks to the threat of showers (which never came) which kept some people at home. It’s become a terrific community event every Memorial and Labor Day.

Downtown, a record 10,000 Beatles fans showed up at the Belvedere Saturday. Beer consumption, we hear, caused the local distributor to scramble to re-stock supply. At the Water Tower, organizers were talking about record attendance numbers, and the parking lot was completely full Saturday night.

There’s more to come — THE BATS are in town for games tonight, tomorrow and Thursday. You know what to do. We’ll award a winner for great seats for today’s game at 3 p.m. We’ll draw randomly from those of you who repond to this e-mail with a comment. Since tomorrow’s game is another of those 11 a.m. starts, go ahead and let us know if you want to win tickets for that one today.

Wednesday it’s Waterfront Wednesday with the Meat Puppets. If you haven’t been, you should really go.

You probably remember all the hoopla about college baseball two years ago when U of L won a Super Regional here and went on to the College World Series. This year the Cards have captured the Big East title and host an NCAA regional at Patterson Field, which means, of course, no beer sales and you have to pay to get in. The Cards get Indiana in the first round Friday night. Ticket prices start at $8.

We’ll get into some real news soon — but catch us on the CW Louisville Live morning show at 10.

This weekend is the 18th Annual Kentucky Reggae Festival at the Water Tower.

It’s not just a bunch of local bands playing Bob Marley covers, either. Organizers of the event take the Jamaican heritage of reggae seriously, lining up eight authentic bands (many with true Jamaicans in their ranks), serving genuine Jamaican food and offering up a vendor marketplace featuring all things Jamaican.

It starts at 2 both Saturday and Sunday, and the entertainment goes until 11 or so. There’s free parking, a kids’ area and you can get in for just $6 before 6, $9 after 6, or free if you win tickets from Page One Kentucky and The ‘Ville Voice.

That’s right, we’re getting you in free. Just respond to this post by leaving a comment, using your real e-mail address, and you’re very likely to win tickets. You’ll just have to meet us Friday and pick them up.

Otis and Raider: We’re happy to report that Otis my dog and Raider the cat found a great new home, thanks to a loyal reader. To all who expressed concern and volunteered to help, thank you.

Rachel: After a record-setting long shot won the Derby, no one was surprised when Rachel Alexandra took the Preakness on Saturday. In the Chuck Olmstead race at Churchill on Saturday, I’m the Truth ran third. Rachel seems to be a TV star, as Preakness ratings were the 2nd highest in two decades. [Bloodhorse]

Reggae, Mon: This weekend is the Kentucky Reggae Festival at the Water Tower. We’ve got tickets to give away, so stay tuned.

Rooftop Lunch: On Thursday, three Beatles copy bands will re-create the last Beatles concert, which took place on a rooftop in London in 1969. The lunch hour show will take place atop the Visitors Center at 4th and Jefferson. Seems there’s some Beatles event in town this weekend, too. [Abbey Road on the River]

Somebody Alert the Makers Mark Ad Dept: Here’s a good idea for a new ad for the bourbon, and some more serious analysis of the ill-conceived tax on alcohol. [Herald-Leader]

Playing in Traffic: Don’t do this. A woman got in an argument driving on the Snyder. Pulled over. Her friend threw her cell phone on the highway. She walked into traffic to get it, and got hit. She died at 2:55 a.m. [Courier]

No, Mitch is Not Endorsing Bunning: Mitch McConnell repeated on Sunday for Fox News Sunday viewers that he’s not endorsing Jim Bunning for re-election. And Bunning again made himself unavailable for comment. [AP]

Newspaper Talk: On Sunday, the C-J splashed a speech from Arnold Garson on the front page of its Forum section. It’s the same content he’s been telling anyone who will listen for months — the paper’s in good shape, yada yada. It also served as a launching point for listeners to bitch about the paper all Sunday morning on Joe Elliott’s radio show. [C-J]

Union Hotspot: The New York Times focused its attention on our city’s nurses yesterday and their battle to unionize over a 20-year period. Congress is considering “card check” legislation that would make it easier for unions to organize, eliminating secret ballots required for official recognition. But it doesn’t look like the legislation has enough support. [NYTimes]

Gordon Guilty: Finally, a resolution to the story of Michael Gordon, the Hurstbourne auto dealer who attacked Fox41 cameraman Dave White and reporter Dick Irby as they were taping footage of his property. Gordon pled guilty to harassment, and has to do 20 hours of community service. And pay for a camera lens. [Fox41]

Mom Speaks: Yesterday WHAS-TV’s Renee Murphy spoke to Judith Cunigan, Karen Sypher’s mother. Cunigan has been on Fox41’s interview on Monday, but refused to go on camera for WHAS-TV. She did say that her daughter never asked for money from Rick Pitino, that Karen’s in counseling and is losing weight stressing over the ordeal. [WHAS-TV]

Tasting Crowds: All those big charity event organizers are worrying about what the economy will do to their crowds. Hotels have vacancies, and we’re hearing you can get Derby tickets for a fraction of what they cost last year. But last night’s Taste of Derby at Slugger Field attracted 1,100 people paying $75 each. [WHAS-TV]

It Happened in Vegas, Ended up in Open Records: UK has fired four employees from its College of Pharmacy after it was discovered that the school was billed for more than $2,000 in alcohol expense on a weekend in Vegas. Yes, this does sound a lot like Lexington’s airport fiasco. [H-L]

Easy, If Your Name is Deasy: U of L announced yesterday that the PhD awarded to John Deasy, obtained in a single semester with the help of shamed Education dean Robert Felner, was all above board. So we now know it’s possible to get a U of L PhD in one semester. Well, not any more. The school has changed the rules as a result of its investigation. [Page One]

Downard Doesn’t Believe: Reacting the Mayor’s announcement that he’s hiring former assistant Rick Johnstone at a salary of $94K because he’s the best prepared to lead the stimulus spending effort, Councilman Kelly Downard said, “I don’t believe it.” Downard thinks the city’s hiring freeze should apply to the Mayor, who he says “hires anybody he wants.” [Fox41]

Steve Forbert gave about 50 fans a solid 30-minute set at Ear x-tacy today, but it was pretty obvious that Noon was not a normal performance time. He had a little trouble figuring out what time it was, and botched the WFPK call letters in announcing the start of the station’s pledge drive. He’s playing Gerstle’s tonight.

Maybe asking artists used to playing late nights to come in at Noon is asking a lot. John Timmons of Ear x-tacy pledged $250 and challenged everyone to support public radio. The Louisville Public Media pledge drive started today.

Rachel Yamagata, who played the Hard Rock last night, played a set of songs from her latest album as well.
