“We want people to go to the Web site or stop by the library and give us their input,” said Mayor Clay Foreman. “It only takes a few seconds to vote. We have really good choices remaining and we’re excited to see how this turns out.”

J-town’s also looking to rename Bluegrass Industrial Park to one of the following:

Last week the new Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby logos were unveiled.

For the second year in a row, the logos were created in partnership with SME Branding. And try as we might, we can’t find a reason not to absolutely love them.

See for yourself:

KENTUCKY DERBY 136

KENTUCKY OAKS 136

From the press release:

Horses are featured prominently in both event marks, with a contemporary, athletic horse head topping the Kentucky Derby 136 logo and a curvaceous pink filly attached to the Kentucky Oaks 136 design. Both event logos also feature the Derby and Oaks “icon” marks – golden horseshoes with a red rose for Derby and a pink stargazer lily for Oaks – embedded within the overall artwork. The official Kentucky Derby 136 mark introduces a new color, sapphire blue, to the Derby brand colors of red and gold, while a shade of plum accentuates the more feminine aspects of the Kentucky Oaks’ signature colors of pink and gold.

-SNIP-

“The new Kentucky Derby and Oaks 136 logos build upon an overall visual brand strategy introduced in 2009, which folds the ‘icon’ marks representing the Derby and Oaks brands on a year-round basis into a larger event logo design,” said Edward M. O’Hara, SME’s chief creative officer and senior partner. “A horse race is at the heart of the Derby brand, and reintroducing equine images to this year’s logo collection allows us to blend the tradition of premium horse racing with fresh colors and text styles that communicate the Derby and Oaks’ modern-day relevance and constant evolution.”

Shirts, jackets and other items are already for sale at the Derby Store. Glasses and other items are scheduled to be released prior to the holiday season.

OK, so it’s time to share another of those Possiblity City spots, the one you may have missed between the meatball and brownie-server spots during Saturday’s Cats-Cards football game on cable.

This one we like, mainly because it steals its concept directly from those goofy, but professionally-produced erectile dysfunction spots, and features several couples goofing around and getting ready, you assume, to have sex. Which is fun, and that’s what this whole Possibility City craze is all about.

The script includes winning lines like “a more satisfying, recreational, occupational and personal experience.” I’m just waiting for the two bathtubs sitting on a hillside overlooking a lush valley. Nope, but the couple playing under the tire swing is cool enough.

“Happiness lasting longer than four hours is perfectly normal.” Ha Ha.

We get it.

The Possibility City branding campaign has produced this TV spot that is airing the next few weeks on cable and some local stations (and during ESPNU’s broadcast of the Kentucky vs. Louisville football game).

It proposes a cure for ITHAGT (Inability to Have a Good Time) that is, you guessed it, hanging out in Possibility City. Let’s just say it needs a cure for ITPAGS (Inability to Produce a Good Spot). Ha Ha. But they’re used to criticism from us.

I’ll let you chime in on the lameness of it all, the pink shirtiness, the goofy sweater wrapround thing and the frumpy lady with the ’70s hair. It doesn’t exactly get me fired up for the city, but maybe it’ll work.

Miss a few hours to do a solid for a friend, miss a lot. Big thanks to Jake for filling the gaps today. Here’s some of it, and we’ll follow up on our pile of stories ready to be written tomorrow:

New #2 at the C-J: Jean Porter is promoted to Ben Post’s positing as managing editor at the local paper. She’s been there forever (1983) and grew up reading the paper. Seems like a good choice. Benny Ivory is her boss. [C-J]

Deny, Deny, Deny: Spencer County Judge-Executive David Jenkins should lose his job. Not for visiting a skanky 7th Street strip club and charging it to a KACo credit card, but for lying repeatedly about it. His signature and vital info shows up on the receipts, and he hides from media. Despicable. [Herald-Leader]

More Heads Should Roll: If you missed it, KACo executive director Bob Arnold resigned under pressure last week, but not before being assured he’d get $178K in salary through NEXT June – for doing nothing. The suits say it’s part of his termination clause in his contract. So let’s go after whoever is writing employment contracts in the state, and quit rewarding incompetence with plush deals. [Herald-Leader]

And Some More Nuts: Listening to Francene’s radio show on the drive to Indy, on the topic of the public high school football coach in Breckenridge County taking players to church, the lunatic fringe was out in force. One guy equated the situation with school buses taking kids to the Ali Center, reasoning that they’re all being indoctrinated into the Muslim religion, since Ali is Muslim. Others said it’s all OK since the coach’s church was Christian. Logic is lost on these people. [Courier]

Friend of Lou-A-Thon: We’re taking total credit for this. More than 1,000 people have signed up for the Friend of Lou buddy campaign since a new campaign was launched Sept. 1. Today they launched some new TV ads, which we may show you tomorrow. [FoL]

A New Feature: We’re shouting out media birthdays, and today is WHAS-TV’s Andy Treinen’s 41st.

The Friend of Lou campaign is back at attempting to get attention with a new burst of publicity in an attempt to sign up 20,000 Friends of Lou this month. They’ve got Louisville’s B-List of celebs involved — Southern Belle Emily Gimmel, Darryl Isaac (???), Patti Swope and Terry Meiners are among those involved.

The campaign put together this video as a sign of things to come.

All this is paid for by the Greater Louisville Branding Project (remember those videos diss-ing Boston, Atlanta and Dallas), which consists of GLI, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, local businesses and, yes, Metro Government.

If you sign up, you might get some cool stuff in the mail. Tell ‘em the ‘Ville Voice sent you.

Jeffersontown’s City Council voted this week to spend $70,000 to do a study of its marketing efforts, recommend wayfinding strategy and possibly come up with a new name for the Bluegrass Industrial Park.

The decision was OK’d by five of the Council members. Pam Ware and Bill Dieruf were opposed, as was Ray Perkins, who wasn’t at Monday’s meeting.

Dieruf, who’s actively campaigning for Mayor Clay Foreman’s job, said the expense is unnecessary because the Mayor and his economic development team should be doing the city’s marketing.

“It’s easier for the Mayor to get somebody else to do it than to do it himself,” said Dieruf, who operates a hardware store on Taylorsville Road. “In good times, you hire somebody to sweep the streets. In hard times, you sweep the streets yourself.”

Dieruf added that the money only goes to fund a study — and the city may not have the money to implement its recommendations. He compared that to getting blueprints for a house and not building it.

Foreman presented the plan from the New West Agency, which won the business in competition with dozens of others firms. New West’s Tom Howell said the city has a bigger story to tell than the image it currently projects.

“This is a branding and wayfinding plan to more closely align the city with all the features that it offers,” he said, mentioning the city’s restaurants, businesses, and jobs.

Immediately, New West will begin interviews with officials and residents and will set up a website for residents to contribute ideas. New West, the agency that selected the Unbridled Spirit slogan for the state of Kentucky, will use some of the same techniques for Jeffersontown, on a smaller scale. One idea is to change the name of the Industrial Park.

“The first thing we have to do is find out what kind of brand equity Bluegrass Industrial Park has,” Howell said.
