Jerry Abramson and John Yarmuth will join each other in Shively at 10:30 A.M. for a press conference. They plan to announce improvements for traffic flow in “suburban areas” of Louisville, according to the release. [Press Release]

Can we talk about how awesome it is for the Courier-Journal to support the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage? This critics of this project are bringing great shame upon us all. And it’s time to shut up. Now, let’s hear television and radio step up as the Courier’s editorial board has done.
Can you say ‘wrong on so many levels’? After our experiences with the private prison at Otter Creek, do we want to put our most vulnerable youth under private/bottom-line care? Don’t we have some of the best non-profits here in Kentucky that already have great records dealing with problem youth? Home of the Innocents, Brooklawn, et al? One has to wonder if the nursing home in Northern Kentucky is payback for Dennis Keene.
State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach has had 40 days to respond to an open records request. Unfortunately, he has gone out of his way to hide information he knows will make him the laughingstock of the country. Thankfully, the national watchdogs are paying attention.

Scott Davenport took guests at this morning’s Ville Voice Breakfast of Champions inside the locker room, so to speak, and got everyone all fired up about winning in the game of life.

Davenport has enjoyed an interesting career path as a coach — Ballard High School head coach, working at U of L under both Denny Crum and Rick Pitino, and now taking Bellarmine to within one refs’ bad call of a potential NCAA Division II national championship at Bellarmine.

If you don’t remember, the Knights lost a squeaker in their final game when a ref ruled that a Bellarmine shooter had his foot on the 3-point line, ruling a last-second, game-tying shot a 2. Davenport’s not quite over it, but is one of those ultra-positive men who used the experience to teach his players a life lesson.

Davenport has got the Bellarmine program on a huge upswing, and he’s a tremendous ambassador for the school.

The Ville Voice Breakfast of Champions is held every two months at Toast on Market. The next one is July 13.

Want to get the workweek started off right?

Join us Monday morning at 7 a.m. for the Ville Voice Breakfast of Champions. It’s our bi-monthly opportunity to hang with other highly-motivated morning people, hear a great speaker and enjoy a wonderful breakfast downtown at Toast on Market.

The speaker is Scott Davenport, head basketball coach at Bellarmine University (and Iroquois High alum!). The school just completed one of the most successful seasons in its history, compiling a 26-7 record. Davenport led the Knights to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. Davenport, formerly an assistant coach at the University of Louisville and head coach at Ballard High School, just finished his fourth year at Bellarmine.

Our previous speakers were Dan Jones of 21st Century Parks and John Asher of Churchill Downs.

Bring $15 in cash, and show up by 7. You’ll get your brain and belly filled, and you’ll meet someone new.

There are some smart students over there at Bellarmine.

A campus-wide survey conducted among about 1,000 students, faculty and staff revealed that just 1 in 10 self-reported as smokers. The school convened a committee to recommend a smoking policy, and those on campus were notified today that lighting up will not be allowed beginning in 2010.

So beginning on January 1, 2010, the only place to smoke on campus will be in personal vehicles.

The University of Louisville has placed smoking restrictions on its Health Sciences campus, but not anywhere else. At UK, a campus-wide ban goes into effect in November.

In the survey, on-campus respondents voted overwhelmingly (88 percent) that the school should offer smoking cessation classes.

No, Not THAT War: Steve Neal of the Jefferson County Teachers Association proclaimed the war between the union and JCPS was over last night after the school board agreed to 1 percent raises and the union agreed to drop its participation in a silly lawsuit brought by teachers whose contracts were not renewed. But a part of the agreement forces non-union teachers to pay a portion of their salary to JCTA. So the conflict may not be over within the teachers group.
The Crap Underground: Below the surface at the arena construction site, it turns out there are all kinds of building materials, much of it more than a century old. To get rid of it, the arena authority is spending nearly half its contingency fund. No worries, says Jim Host. He’s paying for overtime for the 250 workers on site to make sure the project stays on schedule.
Tourism’s Top Ten: Quick, how many of the state’s Top Ten spring festivals and events are in Louisville? Three — Abbey Road on the River, the Humana Festival of New American Plays and the Kentucky Derby Festival. Check out the list. [Kentucky Tourism Council]

Firefighters win in Court, Again: Metro Government is running out of options, and will soon have to clean out its reserve fund to pay firefighters the back pay they’re owed.
