Tina Ward-Pugh May Have a Problem On Her Hands

Louisville Metro Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh (from my district) is expressing doubt about the candidacy of Barack Obama. That’s right– Tina, a progressive among progressives, is spreading this tired crap through the media.

All this after it became clear that Clinton would be officially backing Obama by the end of this week. Click here to watch the video.

From WHAS11’s Joe Arnold: Metro Council member Tina Ward-Pugh says she’s not convinced that Obama has what it takes to be president… Ward-Pugh says she wonders what the nine weeks between now and the convention will reveal about Obama.

Referring to Obama as an empty suit (and she did) is absolutely disgusting. Tina says she hopes to be a delegate to the DNC and we’ve just gotta say: that shouldn’t happen. Any Democrat who can’t fall in line like an adult when their candidate of choice loses doesn’t deserve delegate status. We understand being upset or disappointed, but this is ridiculous.

Tina, Tina, Tina. It’s time to take a chill pill lest your neighborhood of 99% Obama supporters prevents you from holding on to that Metro Council seat. And don’t think for a second that we can’t do it. It’s time to stand up and be a Democrat.

The presidential primary is over. It is time to move on. Obama has a lot of work to do to win over Kentucky voters and that won’t be accomplished if people like Tina continue to spread ignorant and unnecessary doubt. Sure, some of you say you’ll be voting for John McCain. Sure, some of you may do that. But get over yourselves.

P.S. It pisses me off that a woman who has experienced so much discrimination and hardship as an out lesbian and elected official would have such negative things to say about the first African-American to win the Democratic Party’s nod for the presidency. Tina Ward-Pugh has some serious apologizing to do and some major fences to mend.

Here’s the number to Tina’s office: 502.574.1109. Why don’t you start calling her to express your concern that she’s not a real Democrat? Or you may click here to contact her via email. Tina’s assistant is Mary Rose Beyerle and you may contact her at 502.574.3908 or via email here.

UPDATE @ 2: Hey, Tina, this thing has gone national. Take a look.

Ready to apologize to your constituency or are you still standing on ignorant arguments?

We’ve been your biggest fan in the past and will continue down the road of being a fan. But you need to suffocate this thing before it gets bigger.

UPDATE @ 3:44: Tina just responded to our post HERE:

Tina Ward-Pugh // Jun 5, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your misrepresentation of what I said when asked by a reporter “what now.” Yesterday was the day after my candidate’s opponent reached the 2118 to become the presumtive nominee. As was the case with Senator Clinton in her remarks Tuesday night, I congratulated Sen. Obama for his efforts and made no disparaging remarks about him. I also said in the interview that I would not be working against him in any way and that like millions of us, we were going to use the next 9 weeks until the convention to peel back the layers that we’ve seen so far to learn more about what was underneath. To say the day after the end of the primary contests that I believe Sen. Clinton is the stronger candidate in the fall in no way suggests that I won’t vote for the Democrat in the fall. On the contrary. I will be voting for the Democrat in the fall but I also recognize the reality that Sen. Obama needs to spend the next 9 weeks earning millions of votes. When Senator Clinton was asked by Wolff Blitzer what she would say to the 40% of her supporters who would not vote for anyone other than her in the fall, she didn’t hesitat to say, “I would tell them they are making a grave mistake.” Is it too much to ask of Senator Clinton’s supporters to remain loyal to her until she DOES declare definitively what she plans to do in the coming weeks? I don’t think so and so I’m awaiting her announcement as are many others. If that is too much to ask or in some way diminishes the presumptive nominee–and I don’t see how it does– then we’ll simply have to disagree on that. Thanks again for the chance to respond.

Monday Afternoon Roundup. Primary Eve Edition.

Dropping Cynicism and Negativity? Who said “When people drop cynicism and drop negativity and work together, we can do anything?” Guess. It wasn’t Bruce Lunsford. Peep the video for proof. Something about doing Mitch McConnell’s dirty work? [YouTube]

Former racist Klan member and 700-year member of the U.S. Senate Robert Byrd (D-WV) endorsed Barack Obama. “Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support,” Byrd said. [Ben Smith/Politico]

One of the names listed on Greg Fischer’s illegal Obama flyer is none other than Paula McCraney. McCraney, you’ll recall if you’re in the Louisville media market, is the former spokeswoman for the Circuit Court Clerk who was fired after “someone” unsealed documents in the prominent local murder case of Ivan Cano. [WHAS11]

Someone is making phone calls at– get this– 3:00 A.M.— to voters, claiming to be from Bruce Lunsford’s U.S. Senate campaign. The calls are not coming from the Lunsford campaign. Stinks of retarded ass Fischer campaign behavior. What’s up with this, Kim & A.J.? [Press Release]

A Frank Simon-esque mailer that is sickeningly homophobic went out across the Louisville Metro Council’s 6th District attacking Democratic candidate Ken Herndon. Herndon’s opponent, incumbent George Unseld, is holding a 3:30 press conference to denounce it.

We’ve redacted a portion of the text from the mailer (claimed to have been paid for by “Citizens for Family and Moral Values”) because it’s, well, sick and inappropriate.

Take a peek:

The front of the mailer has a photo of four men at a gay pride parade and suggests that Ken Herndon tries to hide his sexual orientation, which isn’t true. “I guess when you live a life of trash…” is just some of the fancy language used.

The back is just beyond belief. It personally attacks a member of Herndon’s campaign staff, alleging that the staffer is a drunk driver and alleging that said staffer was “charged with being a pedophile.” Yeah, that’s right. Vomit-inducing.

Is this what DEMOCRATIC politics have come to in Louisville, Kentucky’s largest city? Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is despicable.

Frank Simon Rears His Hateful Head Again

Crazy/bigoted/racist/sexist/homophobic/anti-semitic hack Frank Simon is back in action. No, he’s not blaming the Holocaust on us gays again. This time he’s endorsing Democratic candidates who not only don’t want his endorsement but never asked for his endorsement. We received reports of Simon’s activities and immediately started digging. One endorsee’s name stuck out at us. Turns out Simon chose to endorse Brent Ackerson, a Democrat running for Louisville’s Metro Council in the 26th District.

I gave Brent a call at his home last evening to get to the bottom of things. He told me– emphatically– that he never sought Simon’s endorsement, doesn’t want his endorsement and wholly denounces his endorsement. So that should set the record straight in the ongoing saga of Simon craziness.

This isn’t the first time Frank Simon has pulled this trick. He did the same thing in 2006 when he endorsed Charlie Cunningham, who was running for judge at the time. Charlie never sought nor wanted Simon’s endorsement. It’s just a tactic he uses to harm people he doesn’t like, has a grudge against or wants to lose in the general election. It’s time local media woke up to Simon’s shenanigans and put an end to them once and for all. And the Republican Party should denounce his offensive activity.

Bank Robber Shot to Death in Louisville

A man who robbed the Beechmont location of Stock Yards Bank in Louisville was shot to death today just after 12:00 Noon.

It’s 2008. Why do people even attempt to rob banks these days?

This is what happens when you do crazy crap. You get shot – 14 or 15 times – until you’re dead dead dead.

From the C-J:

About noon a Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy saw an individual wearing a bandana enter the bank at 4825 South Third Street, Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Robert White said.

When the man left the bank, the deputy confronted him and the man showed a weapon and at least one shot is fired, White said. It was not clear who fired the shot, however, and the suspect fled in a car with an undetermined amount of bank money, driving south on Third Street.
-SNIP-
Sue Griffin, who was visiting relatives on Tenny, said a neighbor called to say they had heard on a police scanner that a Stock Yards Bank branch had been robbed and that Griffin’s relatives should lock their doors.

Shortly after that, she heard gunfire begin. She said she heard 14 shots. Kenny Hite, who was visiting a friend on Tenny, said, “It was wild. I’ve never heard nothing like it before. They told him to put his gun down … and they opened fire.”

Also peep WHAS11’s noon coverage. Effing crazy.

Wendell Ford Dinner Tonight

Every Democrat with a hundred bucks to throw away on bad food and expensive, watered-down alcohol will be on-hand for the annual Wendell Ford Dinner in Louisville this evening.

We’ll be there. Will you?

If so, introduce yourself to us during the reception or stop by our table to say hello. That’s the best way to make sure we don’t write about your ugly dress or inability to sing. Heck, it’s the best way to make sure we don’t photograph you while you’re drunk and groping your server from behind.

Also, someone will need to give us several free drink tickets. We’ll trade for the less than mean things we’ve said lately. (Dale– you reading this? FREE DRINK TICKETS. Need them.)

Should be a great night of drama, attitude, social rifts, drunken flirting and laughter. If you have gossip? Seek us out tonight. We’ll be all ears and smiling so long as you don’t spill cheap bourbon on our shoes or try to get your greasy fingers on our tie.

To recap, there are a few ways to curry favor with us: Free drink tickets, gossip, free drink tickets, just introduce yourself (especially if you’re an elected who routinely avoids us/someone we say mean things about) and (this is important) tell us how skinny we’re looking these days.

KDP Files Ethics Complaint Against Doug Hawkins

You read it right, kids.

Kentucky Democratic Party Chair Jennifer Moore filed a complaint with the do-nothing Louisville Metro Ethics Commission against Doug Hawkins (R-Sombrero Lover).

Hawkins, a current Metro Council member who is running for State Senate against Perry Clark, links to his senate campaign website on his metro council site, something the KDP alleges is a clear violation of the Louisville Metro Ethics Ordinance (it is).

From a KDP press release:

“This is a blatant abuse of power. Doug Hawkins is simply using his position as a Metro Council Member to support his State Senate campaign and that is in violation of the ethics code,” Moore said. “I am confident that, after reviewing our complaint, the Commission will agree.”

While we agree with Moore’s opinion, it’s a little silly to get so up in arms over Kentucky’s most well-known protector of our white women against Mexicans. The citizens of the 37th State Senate District already know Doug Hawkins is insane. Pointing it out to them is a waste of time.

Isn’t there a senate race to meddle in somewhere? Some money to raise? Votes to buy? Maybe some legitimate work to be done… like pointing out idiots like Frank Simon have seriously violated campaign finance law again and again? Never hear anything about the real wrongdoers. We want some real leadership. Not bickering over a website.

Jennifer, don’t you know? Doug will protect you!
