All the fights over the West End Walmart are adding up to be some of the dumbest in years here in Possibility City. There is NOTHING in that part of town. It won’t kill businesses and it won’t choke local jobs. We hate Walmart, too, but… Get the hell over it. [C-J/AKN]

Jake: I agree completely with you about the Walmart ‘bitching.’ For a decade the folks in this area of the city have been demanding a business to locate there — as the answer to its problems. One decides to do it – obviously spend (probably) $50-75,000,000 to build the damn thing and the same folks who are griping start griping about a parking lot that the company wants to build. What the hell’s wrong with these people. They ought to be having a ‘parade’ to welcome Walmart and thank them for trying to help and running a HUGE risk in building a store in that location BECAUSE OF THE OBVIOUS SECURITY PROBLEMS == instead of carping about a parking lot.

Imagine hauling your groceries across a huge parking lot, in frigid wind or 100 degree heat, to get to the sidewalk or bus stop. Big empty parking lots attract loitering and crime, increasing the security problems Highlander mentions. Look at all the empty hulking big box stores in the “old suburbs”. This is an urban neighborhood and the store should be serving people living downtown and in the West End, most of whom are not driving SUVs and minivans. People outside of downtown have plenty of Wal-Marts to choose from. Maybe this is really about real estate speculation, not serving the market.
