$1.1 million for the Zoo? What the hell do they need a $75,000 a year development director for? Debbie King may be a good board member and did alot to get the bear exhibit up and going, but she has zero clue of the careless day-to-day mismanagment, the waste of time and taxpayer money by folks who get paid to drive a golf cart ($75,00 development director), or sit in their HR office to gossip all day, or those who been at the zoo a gazillion years and do nothing but collect a paycheck. There is so much waste in administration but yet the Keeper and Vet staff is short-handed and bust their asses to provide a meaningful experience.

Technically, the Zoo is expected to repay the $1.1 million. I.E., there’s revenue producing potential.

I would like to see a high-speed train in the heartland, but I think it’s more of a dream than reality. The east coast is the more realistic spot for it.

If we really wanted to sour economic growth in this country and help the environment, we would be looking at high speed freight rail instead of passenger. This would would help central US ailing economies and make a far bigger impact on high congestion and fuel usage. There just isn’t the financial return for passenger rail traffic that there would be for freight.
I could actually get behind a super freight-train system tying distribution and manufacturing nodes to the big cities and ports. This would make the cost of American goods cheaper and make us more competitive on an national stage.

That might be putting the cart before the horse, Mark. Before that we need to get the finical system in this country under control so that they invest in business and growth rather than stealing Granny’s pension.

@ Studs, I don’t disagree that we need a mix of comprehensive tax reforms and targeted increases, along with phased in adjustments to entitlements to reflect modern life expectancies and business markets. However, this must be done without any ability for either side to back out of their commitments.
The politicians have historically shown an absolute lack of fortitude in making necessary cuts to anything, while allowing the proposed tax increases to occur. One will not work without the other, and they must be done in conjunction with no ability for the politicians to cave into pressures. Passing a Federal balanced budget amendment would be a great first step in that effort.
Taxing all of the rich people will only cover this generation of granny’s pensions, but will leave nothing for the next generation’s grannys.

I wonder if LMAS will be getting their day camp workers from Dismas Charities?
