Deleting Things Doesn’t Make Reality Better, LMAS

May 1st, 2012 by jake · 6 Comments

Dear Metro Animal Services:

Deleting comments about concerned animal care advocates questioning why tons of children and random people were allowed to jab their hands into the cages of dogs at Fest-a-Ville while leaving the photos up doesn’t make things better:

We share the concern that you aren’t taking education at these events seriously. Primarily because you focused on face painting and freebies rather than talking to people and providing information.

Where’s the common sense approach the public was promised?

We’re still waiting.

P.S. We’re still waiting on David Yates and his aide, Marty Meyer, to deliver on their LMAS promises, as well. So far? Their words are as empty as Jim King’s.

As the former Education Coordinator for LMAS, I’m not sure anyone is as appalled by this as I am. It was my comment that was deleted from their Facebook album, telling them they should be ashamed to have allowed kids to reach through crates to pet animals (to say nothing of the fact that they photographed it). I also called into question their attempt at “educating” the kids there, as I fail to see how face painting and piƱata batting are 1) at all related to the mission of LMAS, or 2) do anything at all to further the understanding of how to be safe around animals – be they pets or strays.

I have always been an outspoken critic of the asinine shit that goes down at LMAS, especially when I worked there. Those who know me will also tell you I am the first to speak up and support the agency when I see them doing something right. This goes far off the deep-end of poor performance by LMAS, bad PR, and a lack of any semblance of common sense.

If you’re going to be stupid enough to let kids reach into crates, *and* stupid enough to photograph it, somewhere along the line of people in charge there should be *someone* who, at the very least, deletes the photos and prevents this shit from getting out into the world, where it just serves as fodder for (well-deserved) criticism for an already embattled agency.

At best, Justin Scally should issue a public statement apologizing that anyone’s safety was jeopardized at the event, along with a shortlist of how to stay safe around pets – including, never to reach into a crate.

See there, LMAS? I’m not even on your payroll anymore, and yet I’m still offering you PR suggestions – seeing as how no one you’ve ever actually paid to do that job has ever done it well.

    Yet another Metro “lawsuit-waiting-to-happen?”

LMAS is a Joke !!!. Brosko and Scally both need to hit I71 and not stop until they cross the state line.

HOLY CRAP! was my first reaction. When I was the Volunteer Coordinator at LMAS, I instructed volunteers to NEVER let children put fingers. arms or anything else that could be bitten, into the cages. This is a total lack of oversight and is going to result in…you guessed it, a nipped finger and the destruction of the dog involved. Oh well, no problemo, there’s more where that one came from, right?
I’m with Jessica, they need to issue some sort of statement acknowledging their ignorance and stupidity and promising to do better int the future. They’re good at lip service so they should be able to pull that off.

    You see that, folks?

Two prominent former Louisville Metro Animal Services employees speaking out. As they have been doing for years. As they did when they worked at LMAS, only to be pushed out for trying to do the right thing.

This is what happens in Greg Fischer’s “compassionate” Metro Government.
