Why We Roll Our Eyes At The Churchill Threats

April 25th, 2012 by jake · 3 Comments

Churchill Downs loves going after small local businesses that have been in operation for decades. All because those local businesses dare mention “Derby” in any capacity.

So what does Churchill deem appropriate?

Gross Groupon promotions and affiliations with random energy drinks or whatever:

Classy stuff.

This city and those local businesses keep the Kentucky Derby alive. It’s a shame a corporate board made up of people who likely haven’t walked down a sidewalk or interacted with the general public in years is harping on the very people who make the board wealthy.

Louisville and those businesses are the Kentucky Derby and Churchill should think twice about its misguided freakout.

Here’s what I do: I don’t give CD any of my business. The last times I stepped foot on their hallowed grounds was for the Red Cross’ big summer blood drive. And before that it was the Police concert.

CD hasn’t gotten any gaming $$$ from in in at least 7 years, and I have no intention to change that anytime in the near future.

CD wants to reap all of the benefits of these two weeks, yet how much do they truly give back to the community? People I speak with agree that CD could play a more active role in the community, other than happily taking our money.

We can’t sit here and pretend Churchill Downs isn’t important to this community.

Some things are just a little extreme.

I won’t pretend CD isn’t important to the community, Jake, but CD does have a tendency to play by its rules, and its rules only. CD wants, wants, wants, but doesn’t give back a little, like the use of their name on worthwhile projects.
