Just One Of Louisville’s Traffic Ignorance Issues

March 16th, 2012 by jake · 11 Comments

We thought it’d be a good idea to discuss the Brownsboro Sidewalk project again. Primarily because Bob Gunnell can’t stop making shiz up.

So four of us sat in the Dirty Kroger parking lot this morning to count cars and see how crazy people were driving.

Thanks to a reader in law enforcement (who sat with us), we counted more than 3,000 vehicles traveling faster than 60 miles per hour. At least 100 were traveling at speeds above 70MPH.

In a cramped residential zone.

Dozens of visually impaired individuals everywhere.

Pedestrians trying to cross the street to do their shopping. More than 200 people walked by us during that hour, in fact.

And only a handful of drivers recognized they weren’t on an expressway and needed to be on the lookout for people on foot.

So keep pretending that part of town doesn’t need a sidewalk and reduced speed and you’re going to have a neighborhood on the edge of revitalization completely falling apart.

This is Greg Fischer’s Possibility City.

Clearly they are just trying to get to the local businesses in that area as rapidly as possible. Slowing them down will only harm the economy.

How many of those cars were high end Mercedes BMW’s and Jags on their way home to Indian Hills and Mockingbird. ? I lived in that area for over 9 years. and the Dirty Kroger was where I shopped for all my grocery needs. Just trying to get out of that parking lot and back onto Brownsboro Rd. was scary enough. I couldn’t imagine trying to cross it on foot while being visually impaired. Brownsboro is in need of a turning lane and sidewalk for sure. Maybe one day during rush hour we should dress Bob Gunnell in a frog suit blind fold him and have him play frogger. he can earn extra points for every Mercedes BMW and Jag that he dodges while on their way home to Indian Hills.

I won’t fault anybody for having a fancy automobile.

I’d say a solid 95% were from points waaaaaay east. No one who lives in that neighborhood actually drives like a maniac.

And only one person in all of Crescent Hill/Clifton that I know of drives a Maserati. There are no Bentleys or Aston Martins. And I saw several of each this morning.

3000 drivers driving 60 in a 35 mile zone deserve to be hit in the wallet. Sounds like the Metro Police are missing a major opportunity to help these folks respect the people that live and work in that area.

About six years ago LMPD parked near the golf course/near the reservoir on Brownsboro and ticketed a few people but that’s the extent of it.

Traffic flies on Brownsboro all day long – not just during peak hours.

I’d argue that just as many people use Frankfort Avenue as a thoroughfare without as many lanes, without as much speed and with fewer problems.

My wife and I went to Kroger this AM and we saw that police officer in the silver slick-top car that tickets on Payne stop a black sedan that flew past us doing about 60. First time I’ve ever seen anyone stopped on that stretch of Brownsboro.

That can’t be true Jake. The businesses on Frankfort are thriving and that traffic moves way to slow for people to get to them efficiently. Clearly it is only a matter of time before Frankfort is an abandoned ghost-town.

To update: I just stood outside (in short sleeves, even!!! yay global warming) for 20 minutes and counted 53 (yes, that many) 18-wheelers and/or heavy trucks fly by me.

But Bob Gunnell wants you to believe Brownsboro Road is plenty safe for blind folks.

Gunnell is full of it! I am in total agreement with Jake on this Brownsboro road is in dire need of sidewalks. Gunnell and Steve Henry were great buddies…do you see something in common that they both do? Sidewalks enable all people in a Community (blind, wheelchairs, mothers with strollers etc) to enjoy where they live in work, its common sense to me….thanks fors your dedication on this one Jake.

    @Steve,

Unfortunately because Louisville doesnt have any municipal moving violations, such as speeding, all money for fines involving moving violations is therefore a state infraction and the money goes to Frankfort. The city receives no portion of those fines, as they probably should. Hence there is no motivation on the part of the city to have LMPD write violations.
