Oh, yes, we’re still harping on Metro Animal Services. Even during your beloved Christmas/Holiday season.
Forbes has endorsed Nathan Winograd’s model of animal sheltering as a system that bucks the status quo and is truly innovative.
Yep, that’s the very system No Kill Louisville has advocated for at Louisville Metro Animal Services.
From Forbes:
A highlight of 2011: Most people assume that the ASPCA, one of the largest and most well-funded animal-rights groups in the world, who profess to prevent cruelty to animals, would be all for advocating that homeless cats and dogs not be killed at animal shelters. Not so. A big eye opener: The ASPCA has actively fought to prevent cities from establishing no-kill shelters and aggressively fights bills proposed in local city councils that aim to reduce the number of innocent animals being killed. Another shocker? PETA, does too. The true protectors of animals are not the bureaucracy-rich animal rights organizations, but smaller groups and individuals. Nathan Winograd, author of Redemption, and Stanford-law-educated ex-criminal prosecutor and corporate attorney, is the founder of a growing no-kill-shelter movement—and gets my vote for most important intellectual this year. His no-kill actions challenge the status quo by thinking beyond the box. He’s developed a creative and realistic plan that many cities are successfully using to save most of their homeless animals. New York City’s ACC, who murders hundreds of cats and dogs each week needs to reform and implement his ideas.
Happy Holidays!

Thanks Jake for posting this!! We were promised NO KILL. Council passed a resolution. We all were energized at the potential for transformation. Shelby County met that goal; Nathan came and spoke in Cincinnati in the fall. Boone County virtually emptied the Shelter a few weeks ago and then went to Eastern Kentucky and picked up 30 more which they promptly placed. After a”search” and much money spent on salaries we are virtually where we were with a cleaner shelter with less animals- just save a few and kill the rest. So very very disappointing. Where are the programs and the “game plan”? Why do we believe that if we keep doing the same stuff over and over again we will get a different result? The animals and the citizens of Louisville Metro are the losers.

Fischer can’t be bothered with such issues. He’s way too busy posting to his facebook account about his fancy seats at UofL’s bowl game.
The guy is a joke. He couldn’t fix (and still hasn’t) MSD. Crit had to give a watered down report. He failed to act on numerous other issues. Such as EMS, Food Truck legislation, Insight, and mis-using campaign donations. He is burying Louisville under twice the shit Mayor Jerry. I’m sure what’s more concerning; Mayor Fischer’s ineptness or the fact that his primary opponents are chicken-shit to call Fischer out publicly and actually lead. Jim deserves the classless treatment he receives from the KDP. The guy is a gutless coward.
