Why Did Fischer Ignore Our First Responders?

December 16th, 2011 by jake · 5 Comments

Greg Fischer has all kinds of time to attend openings of grocery chains and ice cream shops. He talks a big game when it comes to supporting those who make this city run.

So where was he Tuesday? Certainly not at the American Legion Shawnee Post 193 awards for first responders. He didn’t even send a representative or a letter of congratulations. For maybe the first time, he could have had a photo op that wasn’t staged for a socialite magazine.

He wasn’t there to see Officer Jody Speaks, who was shot and came back to work. Or Firefighter Joey Conway, who served at the fire station at 32nd and River Park for 21 years. Wasn’t there to hear about Sgt. Larry Bisson, the Metro Corrections officer with a “positive can-do attitude in light of an overwhelming workload.”

Dr. Richmond found his way to the event but Greg couldn’t be bothered.

We’re disappointed that at a time like this, no one from the mayor’s office showed up. At a time when there are discussions about overtime, contracts and increasing crime. It’s like MetroSafe calls don’t need to be answered, police beats don’t need to be patrolled, fire trucks don’t need to be manned and ambulances don’t need EMTs and paramedics.

UPDATE FROM JAKE: There was another award given out that evening – Suzanne Bernert won an award for running one of the largest CPR centers in the country and for teaching the suburban fire departments medical training.

Sorry for the exclusion!

Greg Fischer can’t be bothered giving a care about the EMS people and First Responders. After all, after 18 months of no contract, its not high on his political agenda. He would rather cover the behavior of the Abramson administration and keep piling up the crap on the community that comes from Scally. As if anything changed with LMAS. Greg’s agenda is to be there for every picture that he can get while opening a new McDonald’s that provides low wages, part time jobs, and no benefits and then they wonder why so many people end up on government assistance.

There is no excuse for the Mayor not to have attended this very important event. It is time for the Mayor to sit down at the bargaining table, hire an arbitrator if needed and give these people a contract. They are our hometown heroes!
