Woah: David Jones Hits River Fields Pretty Hard

June 24th, 2011 by jake · 14 Comments

Woah, check this letter from David Jones that’s apparently gone out to every elected official on earth and everyone else (and their mother):

Here’s the text:

I have been asked to organize a gathering of civic leaders to address the pressing issue of our unbuilt eastern bridge. Planned in 1959 as part of PResident Eisenhower’s hugely successful interstate highway system, it is now the ver last section not yet begun! Moreover, Louisville has also lost more than 34,000 jobs in the paste decade, and is now among those cities whose drivers spend the most time in stalled traffic.

The interstate highway system and Louisville desperately need this bridge and the jobs it will create. To accomplish these ends we need to confront the well-organized opposition, and we need your help.

The opposition is a small, local group called River Fields. Many of its members are neighbors who don’t want the bridge built in their neighborhood. They have executed a brilliant and successful strategy, using multiple provisions of various federal regulations to delay construction of the eastern bridge for decades and raise its cost dramatically.

You may remember that River Fields also disrupted traffic and delayed construction of the new River Road bridge over Harrods Creek, filing lawsuits based on the dubious assertion that a one-lane bridge was safer than a two-lane bridge.

From 1950 to 2011, 52 years, is long enough. Justice delayed is justice denied.

Please join me at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, in the Waterford Room on the 25th floor of the Galt House Rivue Tower, to take a principled stand against endless obstruction and in favor of jobs and progress.

Sinserely,

David A. Jones

This is what you call a giant ripping of the butt holes. I mean, we hurt just thinking about it – and we don’t even like River Fields.

I know Greg Fischer received one of these letters with a personal invite.

Will he have the guts to show up?

I wish I had been invited…sounds like fun!

As sympathetic as I am to disgust with the “2 bridge, 1 tunnel”-compromise that works for no one, I am curious why Jones isn’t taking a little responsibility here? Why the righteous tone? At the time this compromise was made, it could not have possibly happened without his blessing. Someone once told me he was in the room, and it was his idea?

What’s most disturbing is the timing, the public input meetings for altercations recently made to the project are next Monday & Tuesday…why mobilize people AFTER it’s too late? If Jones cared about ordinary citizens giving their input to the project, he’d be encouraging them to attend next week’s public meetings, not distracting them with promises of caviar & crackers at the Rivue Tower.

“Principal stands” from working people, DOES NOT happen at 10 AM on the 25th floor. There are two upcoming meetings to make a difference, and they’re not in July.

Curt– That information has been published here previously

And if you bothered to read this post before commenting, you’d recognize the letter was set to elected officials – and we particularly focused on Greg Fischer – not common folks on the street.

Reality is you have no idea what David is or is not doing on his own time. Nor do I. We don’t know if he’s working with regular folks or not.

I for one, a little folk, say TWO THUMBS UP for Mr. Jones.

Jake- I appreciate you getting out the word about the public meetings.
I did read the post, I just wasn’t clear in my jist- I think it’s sad that Jones thinks he can get the good ole boys together and they can figure stuff out behind our backs like they did in the old days. I keep hoping we’ll move on from this.

I think letting someone with money and perceived power (like David) fight River Fields is good for everyone opposed to the messes RF have caused over many, many years.

Let someone else do some of the dirty work so you don’t have to. And then build upon it. Take what you like that they’ve done and leave the rest behind.

    Kudos to Mr. David Jones!

Fischy is a wuss, he suffers from lackofleadershipitus. He can’t be honest about Judy Green, he can’t and still has not made a decision on LMAS’s Bleaker by the day future, he won’t get rid of Zielke and Bud at MSD while they continue to wipe their own asses with taxpayer dollars. Come on, he’s a wimp and has no clue. He
defers and relies on his staff way too much. I’m sure they’ll schedule something of zero importane so he will look like he has prior commitments. We all know he doesn’t have the backbone or the common sense to lead. Just because your rich doesn’t mean you can lead. I bet Fischy thought being mayor was going to be easy and everyone will like him. How about that fancy consolidation of business folks in Metro. Some folks still don’t know if they have a job come July 1. No leader.

As I’ve always said, follow the money. We know who the largest landowner in Jefferson County is – David Jones who bot up nearly every interchange along the soon to be built Gene Snyder Freeway. I wonder who the beneficiary land owner will be along the southern Indiana route of an east end bridge? Follow the money.

Who cares if David benefits and makes a buck? I don’t.

People need to calm down over money. Having money doesn’t make you a bad person or make you evil all the time.

Just so happens maybe his personal interest benefits the rest of us.

@Curtis, I plan on showing up and letting Mr Jones know that the community does not support the undemocratic, economically detrimental, and socially unjust ORBP. They want you to believe that this project cannot be changed after the 28 but in the history of freeway revolts multiple projects have been altered at later stages. An influential and deep-pocketed individual such as Mr Jones may be the only chance Louisville has of avoiding the catastrophic economic damage associated with the terribly designed downtown ORBP.

Fischy will run faster than Judy Green to an ATM.

  • 14 curtis morrison // Jun 25, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Fischyisscared, Fischygetsomescales- I understand there are a myriad of reasons why people like yourself can only post anonymously and I accept that. But I’m really not wanting the nickname “Fischy” to stick, simply because it doesn’t leave room for improvement. I’m the first to encourage critique, but his name is Mayor Greg Fischer, and you’re critique will be better received if you at least show him that respect.
