Nina Yoder, the University of Louisville nursing student who was kicked out of school for expressing her first amendment rights on a non-UofL blog, lost an appeal to be reinstated in school. Can you believe UofL has spent umpteen thousands and thousands of dollars fighting this? It’s like they have no concept of how much damage this has done to the nursing school. [WHAS11]
It’s a shame Alison Grimes wants to continue talking out of both sides of her mouth. Admitting Beshear is working against her on one side and pretending to support him on the other. It’s a shame she’s getting scared and is offering nothing that Elaine Nogay Walker is offering at this point because she has a really bright future. [Richmond Register]
While we oppose allowing food stamps to be used at Yum! restaurants, let’s not forget their argument: They say some elderly people are unable to prepare meals for themselves. So how are we going to solve that problem? [Phillip Bailey]
The Jefferson County Board of Education hard what the community wants in a new superintendent. Unfortunately, people like Steve Imhoff (hiya, Stevie!) are keen on spending $50,000 to $200,000 not searching for a superintendent but padding the pockets of Terry Holliday’s longtime friend. [FOX41]
Here’s some sort of fancy interview with Ambassador Matthew Barzun. It’s from the foreigns. [Radio 1 Sweden]
Wonder if Todd Lally is aware that women with college degrees earn $713,000 less than men overall? Maybe he’s aware of these other statistics? [Business Insider]
Thanks to recent problems downtown, some folks are just cold freaking out over security on the waterfront. Now they’re freaking out about Thunder Over Louisville. [WAVE3]
Speaking of Thunder… you should probably enter to win these great Thunder tickets, courtesy CITY Properties Group, via Michelle. AND she avoids FTC problems! [Consuming Louisville]
The General Fund and Road Fund were up just a bit in Kentucky for the month of March. Things aren’t puppies and rainbows just yet, however. [Page One]
Wait, did Red China invade us over the weekend? Did Mitch McConnell and his Chinese shipping heiress wife allow that to happen? [FatLip]

“Uof L’s Vacuous Victory”
You’re right, Jake. The UofL honchos continue to waste taxpayer money without real accountability. In the Yoder case, they were in the unenviable position of arguing against freedom of speech (at a “university,” no less); yet they plowed ahead on appeal. Their legal win shows just how hollow the Beknap walls remain.

It’s not just taxpayer dollars getting flushed down the toilet. It’s countless dollars from alumni, private grants, etc.

With respect to the food stamp issue, I can sort of understand it for the homeless, but if an elderly person can get out to KFC, why can’t they prepare a meal at home instead? Or get some frozen dinners at the grocery? Even if just a sandwich and canned peaches?

Exactly. It’s bogus.

Free speech, and displaying a lack of professionalism. As I said before, I understand UofL’s position to a point, although I think expelling was too harsh a penalty.
Of course, I expect something harsh back in response, but if one fully decries what happened to Yoder, one is saying that professionalism in nursing isn’t necessary. I say it is.

Novena: Who ever said it was a ‘university’? Looks more like an ‘athletic club’ to me.

I believe!
It’s what they do.

Re food stamps: My knee-jerk reaction was “No way!” I can’t afford to go out to eat, so why should food stamp recipients – who need both “nutritious” foods and the ability to stretch their “food dollars” farther.
Then I remembered a homeless acquaintance who let his food stamp eligibility lapse. He said he had no means to COOK anything, no refrigeration to STORE anything, & rarely had a can opener that actually works. So when he gets a temp labor job, he blows his meager earnings on an all-you-can-eat buffet — & overeats. HE would be healthier if he budgeted food stamps on fast food.

“Quotation Marks Are Useful for Irony”
Highlander, you’ note that I put quotation marks around the word “university” to signify that UofL may well not be one in the true spirit of the term.

Novena: I had your drift. Just wanted to make sure that the ‘irony’ was genuine. You have always impressed me with your intellect.
