Shame On Us For Thinking Fischer Was Serious

March 28th, 2011 by jake · 17 Comments

Haha, shame on us for thinking Greg Fischer was serious about listening to the citizens of this great city we call home.

Turns out he ditched his meeting in Butchertown to go to the Bellarmine game and has yet to reschedule.

Imagine that.

Please accept our apologies for giving him the rare benefit of the doubt. Won’t happen again.

Note: Yes, I know the game was cool. BUT. His duties as mayor come first. You can’t dispute that. There’s no excuse for abdicating his duty and going against his word.

He needs an experienced mayor to mentor him–send him to Boston for a week to work with Mayor Menino. He hasn’t yet learned to distinguish between public commitment and private fun–and I bet anything there was a private plane involved.

Todd Blue’s plane I would hazard.

Who plans for Bellarmine to be in the National Championship game, anyway?

In this city, that is more than a good enough excuse. He should reschedule quickly, but we can’t pretend we don’t live in a small-to-medium sized city that has two extra-large basketball arenas (Freedom Hall & Yum), along with two regular sized buildings (Memorial Gardens & Broadbent). We even have a big back-up plan in case these places are full (KICC downtown). We can probably seat the entire city for basketball all at the same time.

Earl – What are you smoking? I live in very comfortable Anchorage and I find Jake’s comments about Fisher on the point.

If I had Carbide explosion, with deaths & injury behind my home, I would be exploding with angry.

If I had a Butcher Shop ammonia leak behind my home, I would be raising Cain.

What in the hell is a fucking City government for? Looking out for citizens or doing fucking photo ops & having a good time, on our dime?

Fuck Fisher and his transparency bullshit.

Oh, man I’d be so incredibly pissed. Doesn’t this guy have any advisers to tell him when he’s being an idiot?

    Roger:

Nope, he even screwed his comm guy over by giving him the #2 spot.

I didn’t vote for Fischer. But I was delighted with Bellarmine’s run for the championship. I think I, too, as the city’s top official, would have seized the unexpected chance to be a part of this suddenly possible, perhaps once-in-a-lifetime, opportunity for a hometown university – that graduates a lot of “human resources” and potential movers-&-shakers into our community – to achieve the highest sports honor in it’s history. Bellarmine deserved the attention of our mayor, but the Butchertown folks now deserve his prompt response.

Guess how many people at that game knew he was there? Next to none.

Guess how many people were pissed and ignored at Saturday’s meeting? An entire neighborhood that’s already in the midst of political unrest.

Actually, I would guess that everyone who was at the BU game knew he was there. BU did a phenomenal job of blogging, texting and tweeting about all things related to the Elite 8 and National Championship game.

We were there and knew the mayor was coming late Friday night. He made a point of spending an hour before the game at the local sports bar that BU adopted and walked to each and every table. Same can be said for pre-game at the arena. He has also been to several of BU’s home games this year as I’ve sat near him.

I do completely agree that he should have rescheduled the Butchertown meeting as soon as he changed his plans and sent his apologies.

Actually, according to everyone I spoke with at the game, Fischer did not go to every table. He hung out with just a few people and his own Facebook photos seem to back those claims up quite nicely. As does his years-long penchant for only hanging around the people he is most comfortable.

Let me reiterate: When you decide you want to be a public servant? YOU HAVE TO BE A PUBLIC SERVANT. You don’t get to bail on your commitments to attend a sports game – no matter the excuse. It wouldn’t even be different if Bellarmine was a public school and not a catholic university.

Jake, I’m not sure who you spoke to, but I was there and saw it myself. I’m not a Fischer supporter and didn’t vote for him. I know that BU invited both he and Beshear , but the governor was at the UK game the night before. I’m not condoning, only reporting and trying to correct some of the statements above as someone who was there.

I spoke to his core group of people and I spoke to supporters who work for Bellarmine. People who actively support him.

I don’t want to be repetitive: Tallguy nailed it. Happypants JR couldn’t resist another photo op. Poor decision making. There are other ways to support BU. He needs to stay home and take care of the multiple messes he has going on. Personally I don’t think he will because he has retained most of Happypant’s staff and managers. He needs to replace the entire core!

I’m not sure how significant it is how well he worked the room at our pregame in Massachusetts, but I was there, and — for what it’s worth — he did it like a pro! And then did it again at the arena before tipoff. And then again at halftime.

Our alums, students and boosters were honored he could briefly join us for this remarkable moment. If our photos don’t reflect the depth of his engagement, it’s only because I didn’t spend much time following him!

Says Jason Cissell, avid Fischer supporter and spinster. WOO.

(And before anyone freaks out – just giving Jason a hard time)

…and I love you for it, Jake. :-)
