It’s Gonna Be A Totally Crazy News Day, Folks

Today the great Wendell Berry will receive the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama. I’d say that’s a pretty major honor for a Kentuckian! We should be proud. [White House]

Can you really call the staff reorganization at three area high schools a “shake up” if it’s been expected for a year? [WHAS11]

You thought the Karen Sypher-Rick Pitino sexytime scandal was over? Fat chance. Now she wants to remain out of prison on bail as she appeals her case. Also, we’re still waiting on that “damning evidence” she claims to have that exonerates her. [H-L]

Funny how the job description for the directorship of Louisville Metro Animal Services continues to change. Last week the top spot was reposted with lesser educational wants. Now no degree is required for the $90K/year job. Wonder who Greg has in mind for the job now? Must be a back to scratch somewhere. [Deep Fischer Thoughts]

I’ve got a spending priority for Greg Fischer: stop giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars all Jerry Abramson-style without the approval of Metro Council because you want to impress your rich friends and appease your daddy. [FOX41]

Apparently, according to Public Works & Assets, the city has no paving list. And there are no funding sources in line to pave streets that need it badly. Imagine that. [Deep Metro Thoughts]

Branden Klayko has a new story about the Iron Quarter nightmare plaguing downtown. It’s called “Paved Paradise along Whiskey Row.” You already know the story, but it’s nice to see this getting national attention. [Architect's Newspaper]

Could the Democratic Speaker of the State House, Greg Stumbo, be sending hints to Congressman John Yarmuth that he needs to be careful on the mountaintop removal front? That’s what we hear from both camps, despite an official denial from Yarmuth’s Washington office. [Page One]

Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 class of Leadership Louisville. Apparently, it’s essential to success in Louisville? I’ve never found that to be the case, but who knows? [WAVE3]

The 2011 stargazing season at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park begins Friday, March 11 at 7:00 P.M. The Louisville Astronomical Society will open the doors on the nation’s only state park-based astronomy center. [Press Release & Louisville Astro]

If the community thinks the high schools look bad, just wait until the someone finally takes a look at the elementary schools! 75 percent of JCPS elementaries are in the BOTTOM 25 percent of the state rankings. The elemntary section of the Brown School declined 187 places, Wilder declined 205, Field 255, Bloom 224, Coleridge-Taylor 120, and the supposedly successful (for one year) Atkinson went down 31 places on the list. Portland, which nobody ever mentions, rose over 90 places, as did Wilt. Take a look at School Digger–it is a revelation–and this is what relocation firms use!

Is there any chance whatsoever that Blue DOESN’T turn Whiskey Row into a parking lot? Any?

It’s gonna take someone with Schnatter-caliber money to buy the property up to prevent that from happening.

Well, crap. Resentments for Blue and Fischer are building up, like rocket fuel in the tip of Charlie Sheen’s saber.

Leadership Louisville: Someone once opined that its membership list required (or at least suggested) a more appropriate name — “Leadership east of Poplar Level Road.”

Given that the tuition for Leadership Louisville is $5,000 (and you have to miss 10 to 12 days of work), I would say that success is a prerequisite for Leadership Louisville, not the other way around.

If someone wants to give me $5,000 (that’s a hint :-) ), I’d rather get an online MBA from Morehead State or some other school — more well-rounded, more time spent learning, and more likely able to be with the real people who don’t have five grand to throw away.

Blowin: I’m completely familiar w/School Digger.com. It’s a fantastic site which literally demolishes the JCPS, Berman and this ridiculous busing of public school children. It may be too late, though because this process is now into its 3rd generation of public school kids (a generation being 12 years). I’ve always been astounded that the ‘doogooders’ that support this debacle generally (meaning about 80%) either send THEIR KIDS to private or Catholic schools. The cartoonist, Murphy (who’s good) but who rails about the anti-busing crowd sends his kids to Catholic schools. Heyburn’s son went to Country Day. Jonathan Blum’s kids go to Anchorage as elementary and THEN TO MANUAL — guess how they got in there.
Requires a non-violent revolution to wake up this sleepy town. May be too late.
