The Heiner camp is releasing a new television spot highlighting the mess:

Bets on how long it’ll take Fischer to fabricate an attack in response?

One of the worst things is, when the Once Great Newspaper inevitably endorses Greg Fischer, it will more than likely gloss this over, act like it’s no big deal or pretend it never happened…

  • 3 Eric // Oct 19, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Do we know anything about how Fischer’s team responded? Sure, Jackie made a demand, and then acted in a way that seems to indicate that his demand was met. However, we have no proof that any promises were made.

Sorry, but this is a weak argument by Heiner. And, believe me, I’m no Fischer apologist. It’s a pretty good political move by Heiner, though.

  • 4 Mark Stanton // Oct 19, 2010 at 6:45 pm

I believe Green said he made this demand initially but it was not met. Then he settled for what he could get, which was “significant input”. Heiner needs to let this go lest it become his “aqua buddah”.

Until the e-mails are produced, this is actually a great issue for Heiner to hit on — it underscores Fischer’s lack of transparency and even the fact that Fischer has no public record — therefore, all of Fischer’s proclamations on transparency are untested.

Well, this is a test, and Fischer is failing.

    Go Heiner!

A Kentucky Newspaper will have a b.s. story out in about an hour, I think, filled with Fischer CYA.

LEO’s story tomorrow will have details that make things worse.

Gonna be interesting to see how the mainstream ignores and spins this one.

Did Fischer piss in your cheerios or something? How do you not even have a Hal Heiner category?

  • 8 Curious // Oct 19, 2010 at 10:44 pm

Recently, Joe Arnold referenced the Reggie Meeks case known as Meeks v. Ellis. Since I’m Curious, I did some research. Meeks and Ellis ran in the Democratic primary for Louisville’s 11th Ward Alderman. Meeks gave out free fried chicken at polling stations to get votes.

In the case, the Kentucky Supreme Court stated, “KRS 121.055 (aka the Corrupt Practices Act) clearly prohibits a candidate from offering anything or promising any consideration, either directly or indirectly, in exchange for the support of a voter.” The Court ruled that compliance with KRS 121.055 was mandatory and strict compliance was necessary.

The Court confirmed that violation of KRS 121.055 requires disqualification of a political candidate. Subsequently, Meeks’ election was voided and the nomination was deemed vacant.

A Kentucky Newspaper reported just tonight “only that Green was promised ‘significant input’ in development of an environmental office for the city if Fischer is elected.”

Dan K., Joe G. and the rest of the editorial board: Could it be any clearer?

Fischer promised Jackie “significant input” in exchange for his support. Your paper reported it as such at least 3 times now. That is a violation of law. A mayoral candidate of one of the largest cities in the country has violated the law and all we hear is crickets.

  • 9 jake // Oct 19, 2010 at 11:09 pm

    It’s not my paper.

But stay tuned for Phillip Bailey’s story tomorrow. He outlines how Greg Fischer is lying and how the C-J got it wrong.

It even goes deeper than the story Joe Arnold reported tonight on WHAS11.

    I have the emails.

Fischer camp = lying. Heiner camp = more honest than they knew.

  • 10 Curious // Oct 19, 2010 at 11:15 pm

My last paragraph was addressed to Dan K., Joe G. and the editorial board (since they monitor this forum 24/7), thus the “your paper” reference.

  • 11 jake // Oct 19, 2010 at 11:16 pm

    Oh, and “futureman,” how’s this?

It’s an email from Jackie Green to his campaign staff/insiders:

    From: Jackie Green
Date: Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 6:52 PM
    Subject: CONFIDENTIAL – Fischer meetings
To: GreenList Louisville, John Hartmann L., Ben Evans, Denis Oudard, Sean Byrne, Tyler Hess, Phil Ardery, Carole & David Bretschneider, Jackie Green

    Quick update.
    Greg & I met Monday.
Andy, John, Ben & I met this afternoon with Greg’s team (Gt): Gil Holland, Chris Poynter, Brandon Coen.
The Gt will draft a document to see how close they can get to our position on land use & transportation (the 2 areas that separate us).
    This is a process.
    Andy is our point contact.
My thanks to Andy, Ben & John – their contribution to today’s meeting drove home points I could not make.

The Gt also raised the issue of our team playing a role inside gov. – should Greg get lucky ;) .
    Grateful
    jlg

    Jackie Green

What was that, again, about this being a farce?

    Fischer is lying.

    Green is lying.

    End of story.

a mess – liberals are just sloppy and not poised politicians! and fischer is so busy trying to be jerry, why didn’t he ask for guidance in how to surround himself with the right people so he looks good.

  • 13 jake // Oct 19, 2010 at 11:48 pm

You’re completely full of shit for suggesting this is a “liberal” issue.

This is an issue of corruption. It has nothing to do with partisanship or political party.

  • 14 C. Herron // Oct 20, 2010 at 1:12 am

“liberal” candidates have been sloppy in the current election cycle, especially locally. issues and stances are not clearly defined, campaigns are not run effectively and they are afraid of standing UP for issues their natural allies want them to support. this issue i’m speaking of isn’t just about fischer, its about the sorry ass democratic party and its inability to be a responsible and responsive political party. there isn’t a third alternative as many wish to have as witnessed in this mayoral race. what fischer and green have done isn’t new, they just got caught. in KY dems and reps do this shit all the time! so ur right its not about partisanship or political party, but in this instance its the silly as liberals that messed up. its partly all of our fault that there isn’t a good liberal candidate for us to vote for…we gotta identify cultivate and support candidates. unfortunately, conservatives seem to be doing this better than liberals.

I’ve read both the C-J and LEO articles, and I don’t think this can really be fully hashed out until the e-mails, not only between Fischer and Green, but also between Green and his staff, are made fully public. There’s still smoke to be cleared.

In today’s LEO article, “Jerry’s kids”, it says “In an e-mail sent that day to his staff, Green wrote that Fischer’s team was the first to raise the proposition of him being a part of the Democratic candidate’s administration, should Fischer be elected.” This is troubling.

Where’s the transparency that the Fischer campaign has been been making proclamations about?

    Let’s see the e-mails.

  • 16 Futureman // Oct 20, 2010 at 7:12 am

Steve- The Leo article seems to be based on the email Jake posted above. Saying that is a job offer is a stretch.

  • 17 Michael // Oct 20, 2010 at 7:38 am

It doesn’t matter if he actually offered a job. It only mattered that he’s bargaining something of value I.e. Influence in exchange for endorsement. That’s it. Broken law. Class D felony.

  • 18 Steve Magruder // Oct 20, 2010 at 7:46 am

Futureman, how can you not be troubled by what you have read? It doesn’t have to be a “job offer” to be illegal. You seem to be hell-bent on spinning for Fischer.

  • 19 Mark H (Not Hebert) // Oct 20, 2010 at 10:38 am

Let’s cut to the chase. While Green still had some leverage (ie. theoretically his supporters), he decided to play that card for his gain. He knew that two weeks from now, he would lose that influence and he cashed in his chips.

Now Green an Fischer can spin it any way they want, but Green sold out and opportunistic Fischer seemed more than willing to pay out, to get him to drop out before the election.

How is this anything other than pay to not play?

  • 20 Futureman // Oct 20, 2010 at 11:27 am

Personally I am less than enthused about any of our choices here. I just think that unless there has been something of actual value exchanged I don’t see the difference between this and Allen endorsing Heiner. Was Heiner explaining the plight of Buthertown before Allen endorsed him? Fischer is major weaksauce but the alternative is someone who is proposing what amounts to a separate but equal policy when it comes to JCPS.

  • 21 jake // Oct 20, 2010 at 11:33 am

What you think and what the law says are two different things. The law makes it clear it doesn’t have to be something of “actual value exchanged.”

To suggest that there was a quid pro quo with Allen is silly. Heiner’s camp had strong ties to Allen long before he dropped out. Joe Burgan, Heiner’s manager, helped run 8664 for a long time. Much of Heiner’s staff are people I know and people with longtime friendships with Allen.

  • 22 Mark H (Not Hebert) // Oct 20, 2010 at 11:41 am

The problem lies with the reported offer of a “role inside gov” section of that email with the cute little ;) notation at the end.

The placement of that notation after that point could only mean one thing
    ;) = $ job ……”should Greg get lucky”

There’s a big difference between playing an inside and and outside roll.
