I’m pretty sure Louisville can’t screw up pensions like those cities (and the state) because of state laws governing annual contributions to CERS.
The teachers are in KERS, and the state house votes on contributions to that every year – so naturally, it’s underfunded by a mile.
Metro employees are in CERS, and the cities pay a finite amount each year, as mandated by state law.

Dont forget that the employees themselves also pay into that system, which has been repeatedly under funded in frankfort. I have heard that the fund has also been pillaged in the past for pet projects.

True- CERS employee contributions are currently 8% of wages.

Why is it that a (male) Jack Welch of GE can be so admired for doing the same things that a (female) Michelle Rhee has done to try to see that kids in the most backward school system in the country get a good education? I think we should recruit her to succeed Berman. She will be available.

Due to Obama-Care, K.R.S. had to eliminate my plan.Starting next year my health care premium rises 600%.The Messiah said if I had a health care and liked it I could keep it.Barack Hussein Obama was lying right through his grin.

Got something to back your pseudo-racist claims up, WARREN?

If he didn’t put Hussein in there, would it be true?

I’ve taken a look at KRS documentation provided to state employees and a retiree and have seen nothing about health reform legislation causing 600% markup of plans.
WARREN’s gonna need to provide documentation.

The two remaining elephants at the zoo need to be relocated to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tn. Zoos, no matter how nice, don’t need to house large animals like elephants. Help support the Elephant Sanctuary at http://www.elephants.com/
The Elephant Sanctuary is not a Zoo, there’s no public viewing of the animals in their care. It is 2,700 acres where elephants a free to roam and are fed and taken care, with all health needs addressed due to abuse in inappropriate captivity such as the Louisville zoo or a circus.

Teacher union in Louisville, JCTA, is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep Berman in place. Voting for Toborowski allows JCTA to accomplish their goal giving them the four votes they need to control the school board. Everything comes down to 4 school board member votes.

Kudos to ‘blowin in the wind’ — she’d be a marvelous successor to Mr. Berman, who’s quite an imposter.

Is Heine Brothers spreading like a Structured Treatment Interruption or like a Sexually Transmitted Disease? Just wondering about the acronym…

how do the unions win? actually the union in dc signed a contract giving her unprecedented power. unions advocate due process. bad teachers usually aren’t fired because administrators don’t follow said due process that is agreed on in the contract and opt to pass the trash to other buildings.
citizen, where do you get this stuff? i call bs.
i still haven’t received an answer to my invite, jake. i’m sincere. come take a look at a “failing school” firsthand. don’t base your opinions soley on reading articles and movies. i’d be happy to show you around.

Invite?
Pro-tip: I don’t read every comment. It’s usually someone else monitoring everything.

see the last thread on testing where you gave me shit for posting while at work on “taxpayer funded computers.” your union bashing seems inconsistent with your politics and i’d be happy to provide you a firsthand look at a school that politicians and standardized testing have deemed “failing.” i bet you’d be surprised

Union bashing? I can’t disagree with some horse shit pulled here and there without being a union basher? Try again.
I don’t care what politicians think. I don’t care about standardized testing. I care about kids getting an education that serves them for their entire lives.
17 jtomm // Oct 13, 2010 at 7:31 pm
your heading is “teaching unions win again.” i’m not sure where that comes from having read this and several articles on what is happening in dc in particular.
anyway, i’m extending a sincere invite to a school labeled “failing” to let you learn a little about standardized testing, politicians, h.b. 176, and kids getting an education.
18 jake // Oct 13, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Uh, maybe because the D.C. union has been after Rhee? If you read the round-up and click the links, you’d see that she resigned, maybe?
In case you didn’t get it the first time: I don’t care about standardized testing. I don’t care what elected officials think.
I care about kids getting a solid education. And I know that’s not happening when administrators are making $300K and teachers are making a tenth of that. It’s not going to happen while JCTA protects bad teachers by shuffling them around. It’s just not.
And to the JCTA crowd: save your complaining about me attacking all teachers. The imperative word there is “bad.”
19 jtomm // Oct 13, 2010 at 7:49 pm
again, in case you missed it, the union renegotiated the contract with her district to give her unprecedented power. so they’re responsible for her resigning?
you also missed where i pointed out that unions advocate due process (completely reasonable) and the district agreed (in the contract). bad teachers are not fired because administrators don’t follow steps to have them fired (i wish they did) and instead shuffle them around. this is principals and the district, not the union.
and if you do care about kids’ education, you better care what politicians think about standardized testing because due to h.b. 176, they have crazy amounts of power over schools. i’ll leave it at that.
if you’re interested in getting out and seeing/learning about what goes on the front lines of this issue that you seem somewhat passionate about, shoot me an email. i’d be happy to provide some perspective.

jtomm: I’ve seen plenty first hand of the handiwork of Brent McKim and his back room deals to keep his power, and it’s never about student achievement. Objective #1: keep the power by purchasing at least 4 school board seats. Objective #2: keep the power by purchasing legislator victories and push them around. Goal: obfuscate, obfuscate, obfuscate to keep from being held accountable. Reality: accountability is coming whether you like it or not. And accountability is measured by tests. Get over it.
