Metro Animal Services Irony Of Ironies

August 3rd, 2010 by jake · 9 Comments

Last week, Metro Animal Services head Wayne Zelinsky sent this email to staff:

We will have a mandatory department meeting on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 2:30. There will also be a Pot Luck lunch (see attached) from 1:30-3:30 to be held in conjunction, which is voluntary. Volunteers are welcome to attend both. See you then.

Isn’t that thoughtful? Great, fun idea. The best way to remember the worst day in history for Metro Animal Services workers is to relive it on the one-year anniversary.

This morning, Zelinsky sent the following update/reminder:

Please don’t forget to sign up for an item to bring on Wednesday, August 4th for our PotLuck lunch. The sign-up sheet is located to the left of the time clock. The PotLuck will be held in the Yellow Trailer from 1:30 to 3:30pm, with the mandatory meeting at 2:30pm. If you choose not to bring an item, you will not be able to eat. If you have any questions please let me know.

Here’s the flyer being distributed:

I’m sure you’ll all agree: the best way to celebrate disaster is to refuse food to anyone who doesn’t/can’t bring a potluck item.

I recommend dozens of you show up as volunteers at MAS tomorrow so you can witness the shiz storm brewing. Remember to take cameras and compassion for the workers and animals who have to deal with the literal living nightmare scenario.

What kind of ass-hat schedules a mandatory meeting right in the middle of a pot-luck, then take a turn acting as the MAS Soup-Nazi?

    Oh, yeah…. Zelinsky.

I know 13 ways to get in and eat without bringing anything. I may have learned it in cop school down in Florida or soomething.

Don’t forget half the people who helped save animals that day now no longer work for MAS. Where does Zelinsky or Jackie get off talking about the flood. Jackie wasn’t even there that day, zelinsky watched as the water rushed in as meloche tried to stop it with a mop bucket and some towels!!! The majority of the animals were taken out by workers, dismass and the few volunteers that were there that day. Later is when most of the volunteers showed up to take care of the animals at the fairgrounds and to help clean up.

Lets celebrate the day, something like, ten plus animals died because of a lack of foresight regarding a plan to deal with any type of disaster. The creek behind MAS is next to the freeway(runoff) and watterson lake(manmade lake with overflow into the creek). not to mention the beaver damn that was there at the time. zelinsky and meloche said this creek will never flood! we know how wrong that was and how wrong this potluck is!!!

Wow. I wish I could attend but I’ll be headed down south for a “Katrina Memorial Potluck”…Really? Who really thought that was a good idea???

BTW…hows that disaster plan coming one year after the flood?

It wasn’t just the animals that drowned that died. Within less that 24 hrs Meloche had staff truck 120 cats back to the shelter, flooded though it was in parts, to euthanize those 120 cats. Those who volunteered or went out to the Fairgrounds to see or deliver donations may remember there were no quarantine cats (quarantine for bite history – waiting to see if rabies) or cats that were considered less social or feral at the Fairgrounds. It is because they were euthanized/dead.

I’ve never written two comments before but Roger that is funny! Earl-that is very clever! And JkarMag, the comments on the other 120 cats were to let you know. Okay-I’m done now.

Sorry, I’m already booked up to my eyeballs with potlucks to celebrate the Super Cell Tornado Outbreak, the New Madrid Earthquake and the first inauguration of Jerry Abramson. I’m all out of little wieners and Cheeze Whiz…
