Rand Paul campaigned against John Yarmuth yesterday and used his campaign funds to do so. Also, some disconnected and dumb as rocks congressional candidates are amping up the welfare queen rhetoric. And Ed Martin is as delusional as the Fun Times Teabagger. [Debby Yetter]

With the exception of Crit Luallen, who is really a civil servant instead of politician, I think this audit will show that it’s never wise to re-elect any politician “for life.”
In valuing mulch over matter, the people of Louisville have to share in some of the blame for Jerry’s mess.
I hope this election will shed some light on a system which has been allowed to operate somewhat in the shadows over the past years.

Two of the candidates – both Democrats – are backed by the current establishment. The top two.

Nothing will change. Those elected to serve will serve themselves and the old money will still run Louisville. No one really wants to change except to give it lip service. Four years from now we will still be in the same mess – probably a little deeper in debt both locally and nationally – and the same old folks will be talking reform. It reminds me of Ol’ Brother. Louisville politics have been a joke, will remain a joke, and nothing will change because those who care can’t do much about it and those who can won’t because they really don’t care about anything other than self-preservation.

I guess the main reason the political landscape rarely changes for the better is that there is a distinct difference between being a civil servant and being a politician.
Politicians are different in that they must have at least some narcissistic qualities about them to want to put themselves out there. I mean, is there anything more narcissistic than asking someone to give you money and vote for you because you feel your are better than everyone else running.
Should it be surprising that when these people get into office, they end up doing what’s in their best interest, instead of the public’s.
Unfortunately, the people in this city who would be able to lead the city in a selfless and honest manner, would never consider running for a political job like mayor, because it would require too much focus on themselves.
As such, the cycle will continue because all of the candidates share that narcissistic trait to some degree or another.

I differ on the weight loss program. Jerry is so ego-centric that he is turning his own quest to lose weight into the program.

As a former fatty, I like the program.
But I’d be much more likely to follow their lead if blowhards (I can say that – because that’s what I am) weren’t trying to be the example setters.
Maybe someone inspirational like… do we have anyone inspirational?

Are there any examples of selfless policiticians from Louisville in the last 20 years? Not trying to argue just looking for examples.

Tom Owen…except Tom already rides his bike everywhere and is too skinny to lose any weight.

Selfless politician — John Yarmuth
Reasons:
– Did not really want to run in the first place. Only got into the race because he couldn’t stand the thought of more Anne Northup, and he didn’t see anyone else getting in that could beat her.
– Gives his salary away every year.
– Is not really a politician. His own staff says he is one of the least “political” persons up there. Just wants to make a difference and get the job done.
– Actually cares about issues and policy, and not just about elections.

Good call. Don’t always agree or believe but you give valid points. Will have to take the staff perception as true since I don’t have any first-hand knowledge. I like the salary giveaway. I wonder if any other politicians would be willing to do this? Wonder how many would run if it were for free?

Kelly Downard.
He retired from PNC Mortgage to start the Community Development Bank.
Then, upon merger and running for council, officially resigned, but stayed as a volunteer for a long period of time to keep things transitioning smoothly.
All you ever hear from the C-J is criticism for asking questions in council meetings that they should have been asking for investigative pieces on how the city is run.
