Fern Creek social studies teacher, Robert Haire, is the latest winner of the WHAS ExCEL (Excellence in Classroom and Education Leadership) Award. Jefferson County Public Schools, WHAS-TV and E.ON U.S. are honoring Haire this afternoon during a ceremony at Fern Creek Traditional High School.
“Mr. Haire’s academic expectations for students are very high,” said Dawn Roseberry, Youth Services Center coordinator. “Moreover, Mr. Haire’s teaching methods motivate students to rise to achieve at high levels. … I see the many things that Bob does to help students not only with academics but also with life skills … [H]e has sponsored the Student Council, coached Quick Recall, organized class officer elections and sponsored a Relay for Life team of students who raised money for breast cancer awareness.”

Haire also has served as Fern Creek’s Social Studies Department Chair and as a member of the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan Committee. He currently is a member of the School Climate Committee, the Advanced Placement Teachers’ Team, and the School Renaissance Committee as well as the Civic Engagement Program Committee at the University of Louisville.
His previous awards and honors include an Outstanding Teacher of American History Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution and an Educator of the Year Award in Law Related Education from JCPS and the Kentucky Court of Justice. In 2007, the McConnell Center and the Liberty Fund invited Haire to attend a national colloquium on the U.S. Constitution. As an ExCEL Award winner, he will receive a $1,000 instructional grant from E.ON U.S.
