I know people have their beefs or whatever with Metrocouncilcritter Barbara Shanklin, but let’s get real for a moment: she deserves some praise for doing something good.
She’s allocated $100,000 from District 2 Construction Infrastructure Funds and her Neighborhood Development Funds to:
- Newburg Middle School: allotted $25,000.00 for a soccer field with bleachers and landscaping.
- Rangeland Elementary School: $40,000.00 for Playground equipment.
- Slaughter Elementary School: $30,000.00 for playground equipment
“I consider this an investment in the welfare of our children,” says Shanklin. “I also believe everyone in the community will take advantage of these facilities and I look forward to their completion next year.”
Kudos to Shanklin. It may seem silly to some to spend funds on playground equipment and landscaping. But no one ever truly thinks about making the lives of school children more enjoyable and tolerable. And this is a good move.

Except for the simple fact that that is what I pay SCHOOL BOARD taxes for!

Don’t these school playgrounds serve double duty as an after-school playground/park for any children that want to use them? Or are they gated & padlocked when school is not in session?

What about the other $5,000?

In most cases, they are not supposed to be used except when school is in session, and if the school folks find out, they will have local police chase them off. In some cases, they are fenced off.
