Your Morning of Bridge Remodeling & Melissa Swan

Today is World AIDS Day. [HHS]

If you missed it, I uncovered corruption within the upper ranks of Greater Clark County Schools. Thanks for Francene, we got the current head of public education to agree to do something about the problem and admit on-air that transparency is necessary. Read all about officials willfully misleading reporters and purposefully hiding public information from the press and the public. [The 'Ville Voice]

Uh, yes, we’re on the Big Four Bridge bandwagon and want it to be finished ASAP. Naysayers be damned. [Broken Sidewalk]

The HullabaLOU Music Festival at Churchill Downs was announced yesterday and all kinds of old people will be singing stuff. I guess people really will spend $60 per day to hear Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews Band and Bon Jovi? Or $975 for a VIP package?  Great news for our economy.  And RICHARD MARX? WHAT? Wow. We’ve seen it all. At least Al Green and Loretta Lynn will be there. [HullabaLOU]

Every media outlet in town is screaming (*cough* Melissa Swan *cough*) about how Louisville has never seen anything like this festival. But, uh, that’s not true? [Just Rambling]

I long for the days when Mrs. Swan was asking the Abramson Administration questions about “gay love” on the teevee. [Page One Flashback]

Remember when Luke Whitehead went to jail for having something like five pounds of weed on him? Now he’s doing something positive with his life and is helping children at the same time. ['Ville Voice Flashback & WHAS11]

Chris Thieneman really thinks he’s running for mayor. He’s opening his “headquarters” this Saturday at 9:30 at 503 Washburn Avenue, Suite 201. According to the release, he’ll host a free pancake breakfast and Santa Claus will terrorize everybody. Then Chris will abruptly switch parties a few times and decide not to do anything. [Press Release]

    Re: HullabaLOU.
Churchill Downs is trying to duplicate the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which is held on the Churchill-owned Fair Grounds. Hey, it doesn’t hurt to try.

    I think it’ll be successful.

Goofy name. A spelling twist of an archaic English noun isn’t clever…it’s just confusing.

It’s also a complete branding FAIL. Doesn’t say anything about music, Louisville, or Churchill Downs. Sorry – NO ONE outside of the area is going to notice the significance of the one letter difference until told, and all you’ll get then is an eye roll. It’s hilarious what you get when you go to the obvious domain name “hullabalou.com”.

And of course anytime you search for the thing, Google is going to say “Did you mean: hullabaloo”

Aside from the name catastrophe, the concerts are a cool idea. It’s a shame they didn’t just buy the rights to the already-established Forecastle Festival. Then you’d have a truly homegrown brand…and a cool story to boot.

As it is we’ll have two festivals on opposite ends of July, which could be a cool thing if the city and sponsors can support such a thing. I just hope Forecastle doesn’t get shut out.

I just saw a WHAS story that referred to Quint Davis as the festival’s consulting producer. Davis is the CEO of the company that produces JazzFest and has been involved with that from its inception in the 70s. So if nothing else, they have someone on board who knows what he’s doing. You’re right, though. Buying the rights to the Forecastle Festival would seem to have made sense.

Something tells me JK wouldn’t sell Forecastle to Churchill for an event like this.

“It’s a shame they didn’t just buy the rights to the already-established Forecastle Festival. ”

Yeah, then we could have a festival that EVERYONE mispronounces.

“all kinds of old people will be singing stuff”

    Ageist.

They have a pretty good line up IMO. I don’t care for any of the headline bands. But would like to see Taj Mahal, Steve Miller and Govt Mule. And I wonder how many of the bands on Saturday that warren Haynes will play with

    Who mispronounces Forecastle?
