In a first for Louisville, Mayor Jerry Abramson has appointed Barbara Weakly-Jones as coroner.
From the press release:
“She brings a lifetime of medical and forensic pathology experience to the job,” Abramson said. “She is also widely respected among her colleagues around the state and the country.”
Weakley-Jones has been a state medical examiner since 1981 and has worked a number of high-profile cases, including the Carrolton bus crash and the Standard Gravure printing plant shooting.
“I am honored to be named coroner of my hometown — and I look forward to serving the people of Louisville,” Weakley-Jones said.
Weakley-Jones has been a professor with the University of Louisville Department of Pathology, is a member of the U of L Board of Overseers and a member of the U of L Foundation.
She has written numerous scholarly works and lectured across the country on everything from how to treat cadavers discovered in water to teaching students and aspiring coroners about the smells of death

Known among the state medical examiner’s office as the Morgue Mother, for her mother-like attitude and demeanor, she holds an associate’s degree from Stephens College in Missouri and bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Louisville.
Weakley-Jones replaces Ron Holmes, who is retiring on Nov. 1.
Think this will end the threat of lawsuits against Ron Holmes?

In a word……….
NO!
The damage has already has been done. And changing jockeys in a middle of a race after the first one makes a infraction isn’t going to make the stewards any happier. To use a racing term.
The Metro Louisville is still on the hook.

At least she has experience relevent to the job, not a professor that writes true crime books. I hope this brings the professionalism back to the office and lets the deputies do their job without the flak.

She certainly doesn’t seem ego-driven and self-serving like her predecessor. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if she didn’t become a role model for more local female department heads & government officials.
