Governors Steve Beshear and Mitch Daniels have agreed on something — they’ve submitted a request for $120 million in federal funding involving bridges — but not THAT bridge project.
One bridge is over in Madison, Ind. But $25 million would go to resurfacing the Big Four Bridge, which planners hope you’ll be able to ride your bike across as soon as 2011.
David Karem, president of the Waterfront Development Corp., said the request from the Governors is an important step.
“It indicates to us it’s a major priority in the Louisville area,” he said. “There’s a good shot. We’ll know if we get the money in January. If that comes through, it would work well toward moving the project forward.”
Construction of the ramp up the Big Four in Waterfront Park is underway, and it’s expected to be finished early next year. But the surface of the bridge, once you get up there, needs plenty of work before pedestrians and cyclists can cross. Karem said that in a best-case scenario, the bridge could open up as early as 18 months from Jan. 2010.
And Kentucky is ahead of Indiana in terms of its ramp to the bridge.
If you’ve seen the construction down at Waterfront Park, you can see the impact the finished product will have on the park. It will be impressive.

They did this in Chattanooga — turned a bridge into a pedestrian bridge — and it was a BIG success. It’s the Walnut Street Bridge, and here are some reviews.
