Huh? A Local Country Music Special

September 16th, 2009 by admin · 3 Comments

Tonight on WLKY, you won’t see the CBS rerun of New Christine, the one where we’re left hanging on to whether Richard is getting left at the altar. CBS opens its Christine season next week.

Instead, the 8 p.m. half-hour will consist of a local special on. . .  ready?

Country Music Jamborees.

That’s right. The station did a story during the May sweeps on the phenomenon, and credits the story with helping it to one of the month’s highest-rated newscasts. So the station took the unusual step of sending Ben Jackey and photographer Greg Burress on the country road to chronicle some of the stories and producing a special.

According to the station: “These music halls are quite a phenomenon across Greater Louisville and they are part of the circuit to the Grand ‘Ole Opry.   The stories and personalities around the Jamborees are quite compelling, and combined with the musical talent on display at these venues; viewers will be treated to a very enjoyable special.”

Locally-produced special are a rare animal — with the exception of sports specials prior to big U of L and UK games (none for this un-hyped game this week), local stations just haven’t made the effort and have been unwilling to break into prime time.

    Smells like Emmy spirit!

But that’s okay. Ben & Greg do good work — and whenever a station allocates its limited resources to produce a local program that celebrates musicians, it’s a rare and laudatory occasion.

Where are these music halls? Am I missing something around here? My uncle was on the Grand Ole Opry in the 80s and I can’t think of much outside of stuff in Scottsburg or Gdforbid Jim Porters.

West Point, Hodgenville and Shepherdsville all have “Jamborees” on the weekend.
