Pence Bows Out, Clears Way for Heiner

September 4th, 2009 by admin · 1 Comment

As we’ve been telling you for weeks, former Lt. Gov. Steve Pence is not running for Mayor. Pence said this morning that he’s not giving up his lucrative law practice, which includes representing Rick Pitino.

Our sources are all pointing to 19th District Metro Councilman Hal Heiner as the latest, best hope for the GOP in the Mayor’s Race. He’ll get the support of the Republican caucus and has a sizable amount of East End backing for the race, which will be especially attractive to him if there’s no serious primary opponent.

Attorney Jim Ellis, supported by local police groups, hasn’t ruled the race out, but it’s considered unlikely tht Ellis, who has no political experience, will get in the race.

Earlier this week, Heiner said he plans to make an announcement by mid-September.

Democrats already in include businessman Greg Fischer and Metro Council members David Tandy and Jim King.
