Jocks in Jail and the Rest

September 2nd, 2009 by admin · 14 Comments

GMA’s Ratings May Rise Here: After Charlie Gibson announced today he’ll be retiring from ABC News, and that his replacement will be our own Diane Sawyer. Our Diane, who grew up here, did the weather on 32, and became a big national star. Whose dad is the guy Tom Sawyer Park is named for. She becomes the host of ABC’s Evening News in January. [ABC]

Fred Gets a Get with The Rick: WLKY’s Fred Cowgill scores an interview with Rick Pitino, who talks about adversity, and focusing, and not THAT. He says he’s still got a lot of friends. And there are some questions about basketball. [WLKY]

Told You It was Packed: The State Fair announced it beat last year’s attendance and revenue numbers, patting itself on the back for, well, all that good weather. And Taylor Swift. Imagine what would be possible if the parking weren’t so f** -ed up. Nearly 622,000 people showed up, 6% better than last year.

Crazy Teabagger Candidate: Republicans don’t have much chance of unseating John Yarmuth in 2010, but they’ve got a crazy teabagger candidate to support.  Marilyn Parker says she wants to take back the country from all those radical socialists in D.C. [Page One]

Bluegrass, The Music: Hey, if you haven’t already responded to our ticket giveaway for this weekend’s Bluegrass Music Festival down at the Water Tower, you’re out of luck. Details on picking up tickets coming soon, but we had an unprecedented response. We hope to see you out there Saturday and Sunday, so you can buy me a beer. [Bluegrass Fest]

Prosecution Screwed: The prosecution’s case is already screwed in the Jason Stinson trial. It didn’t get the delay it wanted, and juror selection is going S L O W.  Don’t look for opening arguments until next week. [C-J]

Today’s Episode of Jocks In Jail: Jockey Miguel Mena got picked up for DUI on Third Street last night with what he said was six beers in his system, so he spent a night in jail. Former UK guard Ed Davender just found out it’s illegal to sell tickets you don’t have. Of course, when cops picked up, they found him holding some marijuana. Which almost put him in the same category as ex-U of Ler Luke Whitehead, arrested last week and arraigned today for carrying around 5 pounds of weed.

    “Adversity, Where Is Thou Sting?”

At least Pitino seems more relaxed, not yelping like a wild coyote. He sits serenely, talkin’ about the most important thing in his life: basketball. That is a big step toward entering the world of UofL reality. Go, Cards, go. Cough, cough.

    “Nearly 622,000 people showed up”

Good to see they are counting people sitting in their cars trying to park now!

“Don’t look for opening arguments until next week.”

Two more things going against the prosecution…the testimony of the doctor saying that Gilpin was not dehydrated but was taking drugs that “could” have contributed to his death, and the fact that no autopsy was performed on Gilpin. They have an uphill climb proving Stinson’s actions were to blame.

Regarding the long lines going into the state fair — from what I’ve heard, most of the delays were due to the fact that some people attending the horse show believed that their permit that allowed them to park in a special place inside Ring Road also including the parking fees, whereas the parking gate people were told that it did not – but that there were separate green stickers that they could purchase that including parking. The arguments between the two were the major cause for the delays.

As a former employee of Kentucky Kingdom, we lose our parking for the state fair. Forced to park catty corner from the bowling alley, it adds 10-15 mintues to an employee’s commute from getting to the annex parking lot to the Check in desk.

Doesn’t get any better in the future either. KFEC needs to finally get rid of old cardinal stadium and convert that to parking. There is no good reason for that to still be standing.

I miss the days when they set the Midway up along I 65

    “Like Teacher, Like Student”

Luke Whitehead was likely startled when arrested for possible weed violations, probably wondering: Coach said we could do anything in the Ville, like he does.
P.S. Luke, not a great move, but you could have done even worse.

I can’t wait to see the traffic fun once events start going on at the riverfront tourist attraction that is the Arena.

  • 8 rickredding // Sep 3, 2009 at 7:18 am

Didn’t you hear? They’re doing a study on parking at the arena, so everything’s going to run smoothly. That’s why they’re not having any public meetings on it or letting the public know what the concerns are.

While I usually wouldn’t defend the downtown arena, I don’t expect that 20,000 people leaving downtown after a game is going to be that big of a deal. How many people drive to and from downtown every day with minimal traffic problems? This is because downtown is not like the fairgrounds, where traffic all is funneled onto a single road. Instead, vehicles will be leaving from a number of parking garages and lots and will be able to disperse in multiple directions on a system of roads.

Leaving the arena won’t be as big a problem as getting to the games. When everyone that thinks they can get there five minutes before tip off has the Third street ramp so backed up that the interstates are backed up to Zorn Ave and Grinstead Dr

  • 12 Chuck // Sep 3, 2009 at 9:57 am

Getting to the games at 7 pm tipoff time is going to be the fun part. Even at 730 its still not going to be fun.

  • 13 Chuck // Sep 3, 2009 at 9:58 am

Folks in Louisville can’t drive straight the way it is. Much less if they all try to converge on the arena from South, East, West. Its going to be an old fashioned Chinese fire drill.

This is a horrible story but when a 15 yr old is taking growth hormone pills and the High School does not have that reported, and the coach is not made aware of that…….I do not want to finish the statement.

The question should be why was a 15 yr old football player taking growth hormone pills?
