Jim King announced his candidacy for Mayor today at 11:30 at Swiss Park, giving him a couple of hours in which he was kinda, sorta the top story in town.
Even though his wife Debbie acknowledged the importance of Ted Kennedy’s death on this day, the King announcement set to be the top local story. Then there was the 10:30 release of the Karen Sypher audio, which dashed whatever chance King might have had to making the first block of local newscasts.
Rick Pitino’s hastily scheduled new conference at 3 helped push the King story down the lead list.
The V.V. was there for King’s event, as were about 100 others, proof that any press conference that includes a chicken dinner is bound to draw a crowd. King spoke about his humble beginnings, his love for his neighborhood, and briefly touched on some of the subjects sure to dominate the campaign. He mentioned a plan to focus on crime, libraries, bringing together urban and suburban interests and even making the city a greener place.
Among those supporting King were Commonwealth’s attorney Dave Stengel, who stood on stage while King spoke. Also on hand were prominent attorney J. Bruce Miller, former Congressman Mike Ward, civil rights activist Mattie Jones and a handful of media.
For those of us handicapping local politics, King enters the race in front of Council member David Tandy and businessman Greg Fischer.

Judging from the comments in the related C-J article, King doesn’t appear to be getting a warm welcome to the campaign, including apparently even from Democrats.

Slick Rick wasn’t able to keep his piehole closed long enough to let Sypher commit the next gaffe. It doesn’t surprise me though because when he should have been lying low he was just lying about something and trying to obfuscate the facts.

So I guess that J. Bruce thinks he can get Jim King elected so they can finally get that NBA that they couldn’t support here even if they had one. Mattie Jones? Pffft. Even Mother Jones had more pull. Dave Stengel? He can’t even do his own job and do you think that any of these people are really looking out for the best interests of this community.
