A Not-So-Swift Response from Metro

August 11th, 2009 by admin · 7 Comments

Last week, we told you about the Butchertown Neighborhood Association’s issues with the JBS/Swift plant. The BNA believes that Swift is storing meat in tractors on what’s known as the Cabel Street lot (which it leases from the city), in violation of zoning codes.

The BNA attorney, Jon Saloman, sent Schreck a letter last week demanding some immediate action, including a stop work order and asking that fines be levied. He said neighbors have noticed diesel engines powering the trucks parked there running at all hours.

After receiving no response from Schreck, Saloman issued another letter to Schreck Monday, complaining about the lack of action by the city, and setting a deadline for this Friday.

I contacted Schreck, the director of Codes and Regulations, who said his office is investigating the claim that meat is being stored illegally. “I don’t believe they’re truly storing meat,” he said, adding that he believes Swift is operating as it should.

Schreck said he would have an answer to Saloman’s letter by Friday.

So Swift is only “kind of” storing meat? How can he know that Swift is operating “as it should” before his office even investigates?

Those “reefer trucks” have been chilling meat on that lot for over 30 years that I can remember. I don’t know if they stay there long or are just waiting for a tractor to hookup and transport the meat to market.

What then does Shreck think they doing? Does he believe that Swift is just trying to burn off some excess diesel they found laying around?

I recall the plant manager stating at the public hearing that they store meat there- it’s on the video and there has to be a transcript floating around. JBS Swift is run by a bunch of crooks, and the city lets them get away with murder over there. (granted its just pigs they murder)

Is Bill Shreck a total Hack? Is he trying to imply by evasion that Swift is storing chocolate milk in those trailers? Conduct your own drive-by: the lot is north of Quincy Street (the floodwall) between Cabel and Webster.

Swift has been moving trailers out of the lot all night long- they may have half the number that they had two days ago in there.
