A group of South End supporters are holding a rally on Sunday with the idea of convincing State Sen. Dan Seum to run for Mayor.
Chris Thieneman has sent a robocall (listen below) to South End residents inviting them to the Sunday, 3:00 p.m. event at Ernesto’s at Dixie Highway and Valley Station Road.

Seum, who told me Monday he was considering the race, hasn’t committed to the running. If he does, he would have to forfeit his chance to be re-elected to his state Senate seat and his role as majority caucus leader. He has a Democratic opponent in that race in John Yarmuth aide Marty Meyer.
Thieneman said there’s a groundswell of support throughout Valley Station for Seum. “He’s not a bullshitter, he tells it like it is,” Thieneman said. “We really believe this is our chance for change.”
Edit from Jake: Should be noted that Thieneman violated the law by not including paid-for-by language on the call. Something he should be well-aware of by now.

Yep – he tells it like it is alright. He tells it like Dan Seum sees it, and that is ultra-conservative. If the GOP wants more votes they’re going to have to quit throwing up these angry righties.

Hey Jake
Thanks for your edit. I have been told by a few good sources that this is a gray area. Since the group of citizens organizing the rally belong to no organization and its not part of any registered candidate.
Heck we don’t even have a name to say who it is paid by. We met for breakfast this week at Jesse’s in Valley Station after reading The Ville Voice piece on Dan’s consideration and felt like we had to do something.
Obviously if Senator Seum decides to commit to running for Mayor we fully intend to register and comply with all campaign laws.
We are a very excited and dedicated group.
Jake, come out and I will buy you a taco. (if its legal) I vaguely remember a “chicken wing” scandal a few elections ago. So I will be very careful.

Hey KYguy
Point taken but if you ever have been around the number of politicians that I have (and maybe you have) then you would know that 99 percent of them have no problem lying to your face.
That is NOT Dan.
Also take note, Senator Seum is not one of the “righties”. He spent many years as a Dem and understands and respects their side.
I was at one of the local union halls last night and many of the people I spoke to said Senator Seum is the only Republican that they would consider.

After the flood of auto warranty robocalls around the country and after all the illegal robocalls throughout Election Year 2008, it should be clear to anyone that including a ‘paid-for-by’ disclaimer is a no-brainer. It takes two seconds.
When you’re advocating the election of or defeat of an individual, you’ve gotta disclose who paid for the call.

Will do.
Sorry to anyone upset.
Chris

Not upsetting to anyone. Just something I always point out.
Granted, it’s mostly with Democrats (the KDP just has a way with fucking things up, I think) – but something I always point out nonetheless.

We would be lucky to have Seum as Mayor.

In my experiences as a resident of PRP for nine years, Dan Seum is a man of utmost integrity and there is no more staunch defender of individual Liberty. And unlike most politicians he will tell you exactly what he thinks rather than carefully measuring and tailoring his remarks based on his audience.
Should he run he will have my vote and I’ll walk whatever number of precincts I have to in order to get him elected.

When I consider whom to support in a race, there are usually three primary considerations:
– Character, if I can ascertain it, either directly or indirectly through others
– Platform — generally and specifically
– Electability
It’s good to read endorsements of Seum’s character on here, since I do not know the man. My take on him has been somewhat different over the years (more in the “is a” than “has” vein), but perhaps I am mistaken about his character.
That said — Mr. Seum’s positions on a number of issues are radically different from mine. I could list them, but since he is a Conservative / Libertarian and I am a pragmatic Progressive, you could probably guess most of them.
So, as good as his character may be, I will be looking for someone with an equally good character AND with a platform / political bent that I can support.

Progressive always equals government intrusion in politics.

I say the more the merrier in this race. It has been much too long since there’s been a mayoral race with real discourse vs. a McCheese rubber stamp. I’ll be looking for a candidate who specifically adds the continued failings of EON/LG&E to properly serve their customers (not just their shareholders) to their ticket. We need a mayor who makes them accountable for keeping the lights on even in mild thuderstorms instead of a mayor who focuses on a game of “pick-up-sticks”.

To all of you South Enders. David Yates, Marty Meyers, Ray Crider are nothing but Puppets for Jerry Aramanson. Tehy get a few crums in jobs and the rest of the South End suffers. The Democrats like Henderson, Welhc, Johnson, and Blackwell are like the puppers of Mater Jerry. Stand up to them and support people that support the south end. By the way isntDan the one who ended the VET testing program. All 18 Democratic State Senators voted to keep it for Jerry and John Yarmuth and his people (Marty Meyers) wanted it to stay.

Seum would be a Great mayor and leader!….he’s got my Vote!…..and any help I can offer. He’s someone who would do what’s right for the community and not for his Ego. looking like this race might actually get some people to pay attention, with as bad as the taxpayers have been raped by Jerry, I hope the Voters stand back and LOOK & REMEMBER the patsies that helped Jerry screw everybody, TANDY,KING, and others.
Also hope that voters can remember to vote against Jerry for Lt. Gov…..maybe Beshear will wise up & dump him?

seum, the guy who supported his daughter’s illegal seating in the state senate rather than acknowledge the law? sounds great…

fleur, that is certainly the Achilles Heel of this “man of integrity”. And it wasn’t just illegal, it was unconstitutional.

Progressive in politics usually means government intrusion.

-Ha! Thanks for reminding me. Jefferson County has some of the worst air quality in the country.
Our city is ranked by Environmental Defense as America’s 38th worst city for air quality.
The American Lung Association gives Louisville an F for our ozone, an F for 24 hour particle pollution, and a fail grade for annual particle pollution.
Thanks Seum!

Suem – party switcher – opportunist. Touted by another party switcher.
20 Ashley // Jul 27, 2009 at 8:22 am
John Yarmuth was a party switcher. As far as Dan’s Daughter. SHe did get more votes from both hte voter, the senate. The only vote she missed was a crooked voted written by the Mayors Deputy Mayor. Rick Johnstone’s brother. Doesnt Rick and his wife have a vested interest in the Mayor. It was political decision not based on legal merits. The prize is that Virginia Woodward, who lost to Perry Clark, Chris Gorman, Dan Seum, Dana Seum Stephenson. Who advocates late Term abortions is now heading up a major office for Me BEshear. Ernie Fletcher will seem like such a good Governor to Steve and Jerry. Sounds like a new fruit flavored sorbet
21 Shatner // Jul 27, 2009 at 9:50 am
Doesn’t he have an arrest record? He was on the news several years ago….some spousal abuse thing if I remember. I think that should probably rule him out
22 Mark S // Jul 27, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Yarmuth a party switcher? Puleeeeze. The Republican party of his youth no longer exists. They left him before he left the Republicans.
Besides, anyone following his career since he began writing his LEO column (long before he ran for office) would not at all be surprised he ran as a Democrat.

[...] Everybody’s trying to goad him into running. South End developer Chris Thieneman has issued a robocall about it. How much does anyone who’s not Doug Hawkins [...]
24 Larry West // Jul 27, 2009 at 6:37 pm
One could probably say that the Democratic Party of Seum’s youth doesn’t exist either — it’s just that there are many Democrats who don’t realize it.
Remember the saying: “If you aren’t a Democrat by age 20, you don’t have a heart, and if you aren’t a Republican by age 30, you don’t have a brain.”
Many people (including myself at age 29) have switched parties.
If Seum ran for mayor, I hope he supports someone good to take his place for Senate — has his daughter lived in Kentucky long enough now? :-)
