Happy July 2. Try to get some work done today. I know it’s hard.
Speaking of Not Working: Churchill is pulling out all the stops on the last Night Racing date of its little experiment. The marketing department dreamed up the idea of getting parents out by offering babysitting at the Derby Museum — only $25 a tyke. But what happened to the cheap beer? [Churchill]
Get Sick Here! Anthem is busy playing P.R. in this dispute with Norton. Yesterday it put out a release quoting officials at Jewish, U of L and Baptist East hospitals saying that yes, the hospitals would love to take business away from Norton. Both sides are filling up radio and TV telling their side of the story, which reminds us of the way the U of L vs. Norton battle over brain surgeons went. [Biz First]
Bo Says No: Rick Bozich is right. JCPS is taking it too easy on the coaches involved in the Max Gilpin tragedy, and blaming his death on creatine and adderall is shameful. [Bozich]
Crit Will Get To It: State Auditor Crit Luallen’s staff should have a field day exposing excessive spending at the Kentucky League of Cities and the Kentucky Association of Counties. She announced yesterday that her office would audit the two non-profits. The Lexington paper, among other things, revealed that Spencer County’s David Jenkins, on the KACo expense account, had visited Louisville’s Thorobred Lounge.[Herald-Leader]
We’re Paying for This, Too: Luallen expressed real outrage when she learned that KACo insurance was paying for criminal defense fees for people like Barren County jailer Leland Cox. Memorable quote: “I let the devil get to me on a weakness I didn’t know I had.” He was sexually abusing female inmates. [Herald-Leader]
Crossing a Journalistic Line: In an effort to boost revenue, the Washington Post is offering lobbyists access to its own reporters and editors, as well as government officials, for $25K. A new low. [Politico]
FrankenFunny: We’re still cracking up over Jake’s post on the election of Al Franken to the Senate. [Page One]

I hate to point out the obvious, but why in the damn hell was an autopsy not performed on Gilpin’s body? Whose decision was it not to perform and autopsy? Did someone not think this was going to be litigated for huge dollars?
Without an autopsy and toxicology, there is no way to say if any outside factors contributed to the death. If the kid really had a fever going into the practice, I would think that could be contributing factor. Without the autopsy and blood work, there is no way to tell who is lying about the parents statement.
Unfortunately, both parties have a lot to gain or lose in this deal and there is very little hard evidence to assist a jury or public opinion in determining what factors or actions are really at fault in this poor kid’s death.
The fact that this kid wasn’t autopsy’d is unforgivable. I feel for the parents, but if it was their call, than I think they give up some of there rights to sue the JCPS if they were able to deny them the ability to scientifically defend themselves against outside factors.

We need the new Louisville mayor (yes, thinking positively about the end to McCheese’s reign) to engage Crit Luellen in the role of Jefferson County “Chief Performance Officer”. What a field day she would have! And I do think Crit would handle the role a tad better than the mess Obama’s person made of the national role before she even started.

I see the wingnuts have planned a tea party downtown on the 4th of July. It’s on Facebook.
One of those who says he “may” attend is our old tough guy friend from Oldham County, J.D. Sparks. So, if you plan on shooting video, watch out! By the way, what happened with the LEO suit/charges against Sparks? Anyone know?

Just so happens Jake’s got the result of the LEO vs. Sparks battle right here:

Mark H, maybe this is just hearsay, but I’ve read that the doctor working on Gilpin advised against an autopsy because the cause of death was obvious at the time — a very high fever associated with heat stroke. The parents, in a moment of extreme difficulty, took the doctor’s advice.
If anyone has a link or additional info to back this story up, I would appreciate it.
At any rate, I highly doubt that the parents of Gilpin denied an autopsy for any nefarious purposes.

Very interesting. You might want to check out “The Oldham Observer” blog, where Sparks came under heavy criticism. A local sheriff’s deputy, who’s also on the local GOP board and a friend of Sparks, outed the identity of the anonymous blogger. The blog has been quiet since the outing. There’s an interesting post on there where the deputy reminds the blogger that the number to call is “911″. My jaw dropped when I read it because it sounded like a threat. It was pretty chilling to see a law enforcement officer involved in this. We’re wondering if he used police computers and tactics to out this guy. It could be that this blogger plans for his next words to come through his lawyer.

I have no doubt Steve that his parents had any nefarious purposes and they were dealing with a horrible situation and not thinking correctly. I;m sure they had already spoken with an attorney or at a minimum had 100 of the calling trying to get the case.
I am just surprised that someone didn’t step in and realize that it may be helpful in proving what exactly happened.

Since there is a CD story in this post, I fell obliged to tell this story.
Last night on TVG the hosts (Ken Rudolph and Chris Katulak) made several digs at Churchill and Kentucky about their lack of slots. One, being their pimping of Lousiana legends night. Said that big purses that day (and the rest of the La. Meets) are becasue of Casino gaming at the tracks.
Also, a note to Mr. Williams, that thourbreds made up less than a 1/3 of the horse population in Kentucky.
Think about that.
