Penalty Box: John Boel seems to be settling into the WLKY-TV morning anchor spot, suffering through all that phony joking around with Jim Bulleit as penance for last fall’s DUI. He improves the morning broadcast, but it seems to me he’d be better utilized doing investigative reporting and working the more important evening newscasts.
WAVE’s Eclipse: Props to WAVE for the Eclipse Award the station won for its 30-minute Affirmed-Alydar feature last spring. News director Lee Eldridge said the station decided to do the special because it was the 30th anniversary of horse racing’s most intriguing rivalry. Not to be the one to inject any reality here, but I wonder who else, if anyone, entered this competition. A Canadian operation, Horse Racing Alberta, received the only other award — an Honorable Mention. We’re more impressed with Billy Reed’s Eclipse. [NTRA]
Rumor of the Day: As much as I like Carrie Weil, she can’t carry the WAVE morning show by herself forever. So the station is bringing on Ray D’Alessio, currently a sports anchor from CNN’s Headline News. He’s a former sports guy at the Fox affiliate in Indianapolis, and, here’s the kicker — he’s a former kicker at Eastern Illinois. He’s been at CNN since 2001.
Win.Net Loss: I’m more surprised that Win.net is still in business than I am that the company filed bankruptcy papers yesterday. When getting online was a novel idea around here, Win.net was a pretty cool company, running all those classes telling people how to get on the fancy internets. [Biz First]
42 Days Left, but…: I know you’re gonna scream if you hear another news anchor prattle on about the digital TV transition, but now the federal government program supplying those $40 converter coupons is out of money. WHAS-TV’s Melanie Kahn went to Best Buy and found a clueless lady buying a converter with her coupon. [WHAS-TV]
CW Time! Tune in today for the CW Louisville Live morning show, where I just might talk about all those hacks from Cordish posing as patrons of Hotel.

The converter coupon department is out of money? Wait until other departments start to run out of money. Why can’t they use out bailout money?

I agree. Put Boel back on the 6 o’clock news. WLKY is wasting his talents in the morning!

The problem with the converter box coupon funding may be that they simply underestimated how many people would be buying the box. I know, obvious statement, but I wonder how many people that do not need the converter bought it because they did not know what was going on.

That happens with every gub’ment hand out, JR. People who don’t really need whatever service they are giving away sign up for it just because it’s “free”. Our elected officials really scare me.

I bought a converter just in case cable goes out. Now you are making me feel guilty.
