Let’s Get This Party Started: Commitment 2008

November 4th, 2008 by rick · No Comments

I’m on the set at WLKY-TV, and Steve Burgin is doing his piece just five feet away from me. It’s 5:19.

Hard to take phone calls though. Rick and Vicki are doing the news about 30 feet away. I’ve got a bar stool and a table, Internet access. I’m set. Just finished talking with Graham Honaker and Brent Ackerson, separately, about the despicable flyer sent by the haters in St. Matthews. See the previous post

5:21 -  Just met Monica Hardin, who’s is really better-looking in person. Jay does a lot of walking around.

5:31 — Cut to Petchenik’s piece on Yarmuth. Where’s Jake? Yarmuth must change colors for the next election. No more orange.  Andy Alcock’s on the Republican side. Earlier, he said Petchenk gets the party, I get the wake. Ha. Northup on camera, already looks beat. Yarmuth won 51-48 last time, but it’ll be more this time.

5:34 — See Monica there. I’m right behind her. She went to cover something at Noe Middle School, where 2 of my boys went. Cool story.  Rick’s getting a haircut tomorrow at 1. I’m getting one, too.

5:36 — My first mention. Thanks, Rick. I’m all about the role of the Internet.

More to come after the Jump:

5:39 — Jake’s got a better intro than I do. Go read his.  They’ve got Ben Jackey’s piece on the Hill-Sodrel race. Not as nasty this time. Vicki’s hot. I don’t mean it like that. She wants a fan. She gets a fan.

5:53 — I’m getting more reports on the electioneering accusations with Steve Imhoff’s school board campaign, and someone wrote in that they’re all JCTA personnel getting paid. Should be a big post-election story.  Polls close soon. Everybody’s impatient.

6:00 — Start of the news here. They want everybody to know that the station won’t start giving results until the polls close in Central Time Zone in an hour. People are still in line around town.  Asking about I Voted stickers, which haven’t been used here forever. Wonder how those people got their free donuts and coffee.

6:02 — Kate Cornell from the helicopter.  Waste of helicopter time. It’s dark.

6:04 — Yes, I’m right behind Vicki, who’s doing the intro for the Obama piece. He is so going to win big.  She does the intro to obligatory McCain piece.

6:07 – Alcock at Republican HQ. Petchenik at Dems. Promoting me again.

6:18 – While they’re covering Indiana races, I checked out the station’s Website spot for results. You’d be surprised to learn that they still have to have people writing down the results, then taking notes over to someone else to input what goes on the air. Online, it looks easy to use the results page.

6:22 — Sorry, Rick, but from over here, anchoring looks pretty easy.

6:29 — This is a surprise. WLKY chooses to hold back on reporting any results. “It’s irresponsible to report results when polls are still open in our viewing area,” says GM Glenn Haygood. He just got a note from CBS saying it will likely project a winner in Kentucky by 7.

6:32 — First results. McConnell ahead 58-42, less than 1% in. McCain in Ky. up 67-32. Way Early.

6:35 — Pizza’s here.  We’ll be back.
