New Shows, Brands and Bans

Sorry about the lack of posting activity yesterday. . . The V.V. has been busy. Here’s what’s happening:

Serving Youth: I like the idea that WLKY-TV has in hiring a Mickey Mouse Club of young videographers to go out and do sideline reports for its new high school-focused Web site - so I wrote about it in LEO.  But I have my doubts that it will be a successful experiment there, or at its counterpart at WHAS-TV. Why? After six months of heavy promotion on WHAS-TV, there’s just not much participation at HS Gametime, where the first item you see is a week old.

Brand New: What’s not to like about the University of Louisville’s new branding campaign? The school did the research, spent time and money on it, and came up with  “It’s Happening Here.” There’s a brand anthem that espouses the school’s courage, passion, insight, imagination, etc. It’s a necessity to spend this kind of money to promote the school, and branding campaigns can spark controversy, remember? This one shouldn’t. The challenge at U of L will be fulfilling the campaign’s goals in light of its budget crisis.

Getting Behind Social Media: About 30 people showed up for the kickoff meeting of the Social Media Club last night at Doe-Anderson. Hardly a groundswell, but enough that the group could easily make some significant things happen in town.  First, we figured out that Social Media is difficult to define — just call it anything online that allows/causes folks to interact. Jason Falls is the group’s big cahuna. I hope the group will take up projects that encourage folks NOT in the business to participate in social media activities - like reading this blog. Here’s another wrap-up on the SMC blog.

No Beer Zone: Phillip Bailey was the first to report,  on his SOULution blog, that a Jefferson Circuit Judge dismissed lawsuits stemming from some Shawnee neighborhoods’ attempts to ban alcohol sales.  Judge Martin McDonald ruled the suits, which included a charge of racial discrimination against Palestinian store owners, had no merit. The Metro Council’s Cheri Bryant-Hamilton called for the stores to stop selling alcohol immediately.
